This measure was not put on an election ballot |
The Maine Legislature Decrease Amendment did not make the November 2012 ballot in the state of Maine as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment. The measure would have decreased the number of legislators in both chambers of the Maine Legislature. It was introduced by State Representative Jon Hinck. If sent to the ballot and enacted by voters, the State Senate would have shrunk from 35 members to 23, and the number of representatives would have decreased from 151 to 101 members.[1]
Path to the ballot
According to Section 4 of Article X, if the Maine House of Representatives and the Maine State Senate both vote by at least a 2/3rds majority, a proposed amendment to the constitution can be placed on the statewide ballot on the Tuesday following the first Monday of November after the state legislature acts.
