This measure was not put on an election ballot |
The Mandatory Minimum Sentencing for Sexual Offenses Initiative did not make the November 3, 2015 ballot in Maine as an indirect initiated state statute. Petitions for this measure expired on March 19, 2015, which meant this measure had the potential to qualify for a 2015 or 2016 election ballot. However, signatures were not submitted by the January 22, 2015, deadline, thereby disqualifying it from the ballot. The measure, which was being sponsored by Stavros J. Mendros, would have created mandatory minimum sentences for persons convicted of certain sex offenses against victims under 12 years of age.[1]
Support
Stavros J. Medros was the sponsor of this initiative. He was also sponsoring the Maine Remove the Concealed Handgun Permit Requirement Initiative (2014), which did not make the ballot.[2]
Path to the ballot
In order to land this initiative on the November 4, 2014, ballot, supporters would have needed to collect 57,277 valid signatures by February 3, 2014. Petitioners missed this deadline, but petitions for this measure expired on March 19, 2015, which meant this measure could still have qualified for a 2015 or 2016 election ballot. However, no signatures were submitted by the January 22, 2015, deadline; so, the measure did not make the ballot.[1]
