Supreme court elections

Only judges in Maine’s probate courts participate in judicial elections. In 2014, sixteen candidates ran, including seven incumbents, with five running unopposed.

The probate court judges are selected in partisan elections. In partisan primaries, each party selects one candidate to compete in the general election. Candidates who run unopposed in the primary are still required to appear on the general election ballot because write-in candidates are permitted during the general election.
