Maine high court to rule on health insurance case
November 15, 2011
BANGOR, Maine: The Supreme Court of Maine has heard oral arguments in a case that pits Anthem Health Plans of Maine against the state's Bureau of Insurance.[1] Anthem is an insurance company that insures 11,000 Maine residents. Anthem is fighting for the right to build in a 3-percent profit and risk margin when setting individual health insurance premiums. The state is arguing that it has the power to regulate the prices that Anthem sets.[2] Maine currently has the authority to regulate rates for individual policy holders. Anthem's past three rate increase proposals have been rejected by Maine's Superintendent of Insurance. Anthem has previously filed suit against the state twice and lost both times. The Attorney General of Maine, William Schneider, is representing Maine's Bureau of Insurance.[1]
