The Judicial Update

August 14, 2012

Maine: Election year politics have stalled the search for George Singal's successor on Maine's U.S. District Court.[1] Singal has announced that he will assume senior status in 2013, opening up a position for another judge on the court. Representative Mike Michaud, as the senior Democrat in Maine's congressional delegation, is responsible for recommending nominees to the Obama administration. However, in early August, Senate Republicans invoked the Thurmond Rule in order to block circuit court nominations within six months of a presidential election. This makes it very unlikely that any of the 75 federal court vacancies will be filled prior to November's presidential election. The last U.S. District Court judge to be appointed in Maine was Nancy Torresen, whose appointment was confirmed in October 2011. Another Maine judge, William Kayatta, is currently awaiting confirmation for the First Circuit Court of Appeals.[2]
