Major Garrett is the chief White House correspondent for CBS News. Prior to his work with CBS, Garrett filled the same role with National Journal and Fox News.

Biography

Major Garrett earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Missouri State University in 1984.[1] He began his career as a print journalist with The Houston Post, The Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Amarillo Global News. He then moved on to become a congressional reporter for The Washington Times, eventually working as that paper's deputy national editor from 1995 to 1997. Additional print work includes time with U.S. News and World Report.[2]

Work and activities

Television broadcasting

Garrett began working in television with CNN in 2002.[3] He then worked as the chief White House Correspondent for Fox News from 2002 to 2010.[2] Garrett left Fox News in 2010 to take a correspondent's position at National Journal.[4]

CBS News

In 2012, Garrett left National Journal to begin working for CBS News as the chief White House correspondent, replacing Norah O'Donnell. Garrett did continue to report for National Journal as a correspondent-at-large.[5] He was named CBS News' chief White House Correspondent in 2018.[2]

As of 2025, Garrett hosted The Takeout, a nightly news show that, according to a CBS press release provided, "in-depth interviews and original segments through the lens of the politics of culture and the culture of politics for the modern and on-the-go streaming audience."[6]

On February 9, 2016, CBS News announced that it will host the ninth Republican presidential primary debate on February 13, 2016. The debate was moderated by John Dickerson and CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett and Kimberley Strassel. The debate took place in Greenville, S.C.[7]
