Malcom Pavey
Malcom Pavey was a candidate for at-large representative on the Sunnyside Unified School District Governing Board in Arizona. He was defeated in the November 4, 2014, general election.
Pavey ran unsuccessfully for a board seat in 2012.

Two incumbents, Eva Carrillo Dong and Daniel Hernandez, Jr., were up for re-election to the at-large seats. They were joined on the ballot by newcomer Malcom Pavey.[1]

Pavey provided the following statement in English and Spanish to the Pima County School Superintendent:
| “ | With a Master’s degree in Education and a Master’s degree in social work, I believe I have the skills, experience, and knowledge to be a Sunnyside Unified District Governing Board member. I have an AZ Substitute Teaching Certificate, and, as a Licensed Independent Substance Abuse Counselor, I have over 15 years of experience counseling juveniles, families, and adults. I have seen, in my own life and in the lives of hundreds of adolescences, juveniles and adults in the judicial system, how an education can present opportunities and career options. While serving on the Citizen’s Transportation Advisory Committee, I was on the budget subcommittee. My experience includes grant writing and procuring needed funding. I was the president of Tres Pueblos’ homeowners association and served on the Pima County District Attorney’s Community Justice Board. I have lived in
Arizona for over 25 years and in Tucson for 15 years. Volunteerism is important, and I believe we should give back to our community. I have also been a mental health volunteer for over 12 years with the Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross in Tucson. Just recently, I was appointed to the Tucson Civil Service Commission, after serving on the Tucson-Pima County Metropolitan Energy Commission. I am very motivated to meet and conquer new challenges! I am married to native Tucsonan, and she has been employed with the Pima County Juvenile Court for 32 years. We are members of Victory Worship Center. I am excited and anticipate the possibilities of working with the other board members, if elected. We must be persistent in confronting and making hard and complex decisions, addressing the indecisions involving the Arizona legislature regarding funding and guidelines on how best to deliver quality education to each student every day of his/her school experience. “Research shows that high-quality preschool programs can significantly reduce felony arrests and incarceration rates and return $10 or more in savings for every dollar invested, with nearly half of the savings coming from lower prison and crime-related costs.” In other words, we can wisely invest a reasonable amount on education or exhaust an unreasonable amount to incarcerate the disenfranchised. The school board is nonpartisan and, as such, quality education must be the main goal and our first priority, not politics as usual. I hope the Board can re-instill confidence and trust between the District and community. The way to do this is through collaboration, transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility. . I will listen to, and firmly believe students, teachers, parents, and community members should have input and be part of the development of policies, procedures, and the function of the Sunnyside Unified School District. It has been said, “It takes a whole community to make a community whole.” I respectfully ask for your vote. I am willing to serve, and I bring a different perspective to the Board as well as a broad range of experience and knowledge. Together, we can restore funding to the classrooms, and confidence in our District.[2][3] |
