Guha earned her bachelor's degree from Yale University and her Master's degree from the University of Westminster. Her professional experience as a journalist includes working as a reporter and editor for major newspapers and specialist publications.
  • Property taxes: New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the nation. These regressive taxes disproportionately burden the middle class and make it especially difficult for seniors on fixed incomes to stay in their homes and young people to afford their first homes. I will work to provide property tax relief to those who can least afford it by identifying areas of cost savings on both the state and local levels that do not affect the quality of our services.
  • Campaign finance reform: An increasing share of campaign funds come from special interest groups which typically seek influence over incumbent politicians. I support campaign finance reform, including public financing of elections. This would allow small dollar donors to play a greater role than special interests in funding campaigns and lessen corruption, which ends up costing us much more in the end. Public financing would also allow a greater diversity of candidates to successfully compete for office. For further information please see my Op-ed, "NJ legislative elections: Public financing needed to amplify voices of average voters."
  • Environment, public health, infrastructure and green jobs: NJ is one of the fastest-warming states in the country. Rising sea levels and increasing intensity of storms caused by climate change increasingly threaten our communities' future and our state's economy. We must make New Jersey a national leader in renewable energy which will also create jobs and grow our state's high-tech economy. I also support investing in the infrastructure needed for electric vehicles and additional investment in NJ Transit. Public health is also critical. More than 1.5 million NJ residents are currently serviced by water with elevated lead levels. We must upgrade our aging water infrastructure to ensure safe drinking water to all residents.
I am passionate about many areas of public policy. I want to work to ensure that everyone has access to a living wage, to affordable healthcare, to a high-quality education, to clean air and clean water, to equal rights and equal justice - no matter who they are, where they come from, or what zip code they live in.
I admire most those who have fought for equal rights for the most vulnerable, oppressed, or least privileged in society. There are many examples of such individuals in history. Two famous ones are Martin Luther King Jr and his fight for civil rights and Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her fight for women's equality.
My passion for people combined with the analytical/investigative skills that I've developed over many years as a journalist to get to the bottom of complex policy issues. I'm always looking to understand on a deep level how systems can be improved, whether that's our healthcare system, our education system, or our criminal justice system. I'm able to ask big picture questions as well as drill down into the weeds of policy. In addition to uncovering the truth about complex issues, as a journalist I also understand the need to be able to communicate or translate these subjects to a wide audience. I am determined to advocate for transparency in government. I will speak truth to power and will always be on the side of the public versus special interests.
I hope to have fought hard to make a difference. I hope to have improved the quality of the lives of many people in my state in numerous ways. That includes helping to devise and implement reforms which made New Jersey more affordable; which made health care more affordable; which improved public health and our environment; which modernized education; and which lessened inequality and helped marginalized groups.
I have heard many impactful stories. Among them is one resident in my district who struggles to afford healthcare for his family, despite having employer-based health insurance, due to high premiums, deductibles and copays for prescription drugs. He has diabetes, his wife suffers from Parkinson's disease, and his daughter in her 20s has a chronic, disabling condition. Recently, his employer has cut many jobs in his area and his biggest fear is losing healthcare for him and his family.
