The Manhattan Institute for Policy Research is a New York 501(c)(3) think tank. It is a policy recommendation organization that supports market-oriented policies and reform. It is based in New York City and was founded in 1980.[1][2] According to its website, the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research "works to keep America and its great cities prosperous, safe, and free."[3]

Background

The Manhattan Institute for Policy Research was founded in 1978 as the International Center for Economic Policy Studies, before renaming itself in 1980.[4]

According to its website, the organization's mission is "dedicated to advancing opportunity, individual liberty, and the rule of law in America and its great cities. We work to improve the quality of life in our urban centers, with a particular focus on the problem of urban violence and the need for public-sector reform. We offer constructive alternatives to identity politics to help overcome our nation’s ethnic and cultural divides. We champion educational excellence and educational choice for all families. We believe that expanding economic freedom is essential to achieving widespread prosperity and upward mobility."[5]

Work and activities

Policy research

The Manhattan Institute focuses on publishing works that develop ideas and policies to support free-market ideas and public policy.[7] Some of the policies the organization has done research about include policing, public safety, housing, education, law, and economics.[5]

Legal reform

City Journal

The Manhattan Institute for Policy Research is responsible for publishing City Journal, a magazine which covers urban policy.[5]

The Adam Smith Society

The Manhattan Institute founded the Adam Smith Society.[5] According to their website, the Adam Smith Society "is committed to defending free enterprise while welcoming the participation of all open-minded people interested in the competition of ideas."[9]

Empire Center for New York State Policy

In 2005, the Manhattan Institute founded the Empire Center for New York State Policy. The organization became an independent entity in 2013.[10]
