Campaign themes
2015
Barrera's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[8]
Pensions
- Excerpt: "[T]he mayor, and others, has constantly targeted the Fire Department as the culprits for the financial mess the City is in; I don't agree."
- Excerpt: "The mayor's office is full of people whose main purpose is to re-elect the mayor, the same for the council members' offices. Let us cut those departments in half and use the money for fire and police protection."
Basic services
- Excerpt: "The purpose of government is; To provide basic services such as police and fire protection; To make sure that our streets are pot hole free and in drivable shape; To make sure that our garbage and trash are picked up on schedule. To make sure that the infrastructure is maintained and serviced as required; And to do so in an efficient manner. Our government has failed us and our district J council member is clueless."
Rain tax
- Excerpt: "The Rain Tax, aka the sewage fee, was to be used for infrastructure or so we were promised. The promises of career politicians like Parker and Laster are worth the paper they are printed on. The money has been used to pay thousands of employees who were being paid with general fund monies. The money was also used for bicycle trails that benefit very few people, mean while our main streets are undrivable in many places because the holes are so big and deep that they cause damage to our vehicles."
HERO ballot measure[9]
- Excerpt: "Why is it so hard for those people to understand that my decision to vote against an ordinance that allows a stranger to be naked next to my daughter or spouse, DOES NOT MAKE ME A BIGOT? Nor does it make anyone else a bigot. Take a stand for privacy, vote NO on the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance."
