Marc Gerstman was the acting New York Commissioner of Environmental Conservation. He began serving in this position upon the resignation of former Commissioner Joe Martens, who stepped down on July 21, 2015, and remained in office until Martens' successor, Basil Seggos, was selected.[1][2]

After obtaining his law degree from Brooklyn Law School, Gerstman began his career in environmental law, working for the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) under Governor Mario Cuomo. He began working with the agency in 1985 as general counsel and then became deputy commissioner from 1995-2001. After leaving the DEC, Gerstman worked as an attorney in private practice on areas of environmental, natural resource, zoning and municipal law. He rejoined the Department in 2011, serving again as Deputy Commissioner under Mario's son, Andrew Cuomo.[3][4]

Upon the resignation of former Commissioner Joe Martens on July 21, 2015, Gerstman became acting commissioner. He remained in that position until Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed permanent successor Basil Seggos.[1][4][2]

New York Deputy Commissioner of Environmental Conservation (1995-2001, 2011-2015)

Gerstman has served twice as deputy commissioner of environmental conservation. The first time was from 1995-2001 under Gov. Mario Cuomo. The second, and most recent time, was under Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He left his position as deputy commissioner in 2015 in order to assume the duties of acting director.[1][4]
