The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 3, 2014. Incumbent Marcos Devers was unopposed in the Democratic primary. Roger Twomey was unopposed in the Republican primary. Devers defeated unenrolled candidate William Lantigua and Twomey in the general election.[5]

On June 16, 2010, Devers won the special election, with 88% of the vote, for the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Sixteenth Essex district.[9]

On November 4, 2008, Devers lost the Massachusetts House of Representatives election for the Sixteenth Essex district.[10] In this election he raised $137,211; of that total $135,928 (99.1%) was from in state contributions and $1,283 (0.9%) was from out of state contributions.[11]
