Margaret A. Chan (Democratic Party) is a judge for the 1st Department of the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division. She assumed office in 2021. Her current term ends on July 30, 2030.

Chan (Democratic Party) ran for re-election for judge of the New York Supreme Court 1st Judicial District. She won in the general election on November 2, 2021.

Biography

Chan received her B.A. from Brooklyn College in 1979 and her J.D. from Touro Law School in 1993.[1] Chan began her career in 1994 as a senior court attorney for the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, 2nd Department. She then joined the law firm of Gim & Chan, P.C. in 1999, where she worked as an associate and partner until 2001. She then worked briefly in 2001 and 2002 as a partner of the Law Offices of Chan, Lee & Cheung, PLLC before starting her own law practice in 2002. She became a civil court judge in 2007 and was appointed an acting supreme court justice in 2013.[1]

Judges of the New York City Civil Court are each elected to 10-year terms in partisan contested elections, with one exception. Judges of the New York City Housing Court are appointed by the Chief Administrative Judge and serve five-year terms. To serve on this court, a judge must be a state and city resident, at least 18 years old and practice in the state for 10 years. This court has a mandatory retirement age of 70 years old.[3]
