Candidate Connection

Margaret Fernandez completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Fernandez's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Healthcare, education, working families

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Healthcare, education, taxes

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to our current state representative Amy Klobuchar. Amy is a no nonsense representative that listens to her constituents and fights for Minnesotans. She is thoughtful and weighs all sides of an issue in a non partisan way.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Integrity and balance are paramount. It is important that our representatives are a representation of their communities they serve. They should not represent special interests but instead strive to make their communities a better more prosperous place to live for all of the community members.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

An advocate that listens and represents the communities they are elected in to represent.

What legacy would you like to leave?

States with educated populations have a higher quality of life and are healthier. They statistically make a higher living wage. These educated individuals then give back to there communities. would like to leave a Minnesota that is in a good place economically for all. Everyone should have access to good, affordable healthcare regardless of age. We need to protect workers and workers rights. We must ensure Minnesota continues to have a top notch public education system and an economy where entrepreneurs and small business owners are encouraged to take chances and grow. Where we protect our environment.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

I remember Walter Mondale running for president and only winning Minnesota and the District of Columbia. I was 7 yeras old.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I worked at Burger King, I started at age 14 and worked there until I was 19years old. I left as a Shift supervisor at 19 for college.

2016

Fernandez's campaign website stated the following:

EDUCATION

We love our local schools but we cannot retreat nor be content with our current system. No matter the quality of our schools, we must continue to improve them because the demands of the next century requires it. Falling behind is not an option we can support when considering the future of our children. Education for our future generations is paramount in ensuring that we provide opportunities for our future generations without leaving them with a substantial financial burden. We must work to make college affordable for everyone.

HOUSING/BUSINESS/ENVIRONMENT

Much has changed in the last 15 years. There has been substantial growth in our community and it continues to grow. We have an opportunity to reach the full potential that our area has to offer.

As a real estate professional I can tell you that commercial growth is an opportunity our community has not fully invested in. We have the potential to create jobs and prosperity as well as help keep real estate taxes lower. But we must insure that that growth enhances our community without defining our neighborhoods. We need to consider smarter safer ways to build industry. We don’t need to raise taxes but we do need to spend wiser.

My family moved here because of the beauty of our area and preserving that beauty is good for our environment but also has the bonus of enhancing the value of our homes. We have an opportunity to ensure we are protecting our local environment and must push for laws that support green spaces and community involvement.

HEALTHCARE

Healthcare is not accessible and affordable for all. We need to continue to work to make healthcare an option for everyone without the high cost.

TRANSPORTATION

Our District potentially more than any other district in the state needs comprehensive transportation legislation passed. This is a priority I will not allow to be overlooked.[5]
