I am a Brazilian-American who has lived and operated a business in Framingham for 30 years. I am proud to be a strong advocate for social justice and equality and have worked and advocated for immigration reform for the past 15 years. My involvement with the Brazilian and American communities led me to embrace a broader political participation and to become the first Brazilian-American woman to be elected to a City Council seat in the USA in 2017, and I served for two terms, as Framingham’s District 7 City Councilor.

Prior to my election in 2017, I was elected Town Meeting Member serving on the Ways and Means Committee, and as the Treasurer’s and Outreach Subcommittee co-chair of the Framingham Democratic Committee. I was appointed as a member of the MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women and elected as the first Massachusetts Brazilian-American Citizens Council Chair. In 2016 I founded the Brazilians for Political Education movement that has been increasing voter registration and citizens’ participation in Massachusetts elections and government. I have a strong connection with the Brazilian American Center (BRACE) where I am a board member and former secretary. I serve as a volunteer board member with the Brazilian Women’s Group. These elected and appointed positions provide me with the knowledge to increase my contribution towards the betterment of our community and to support our most vulnerable population, particularly during the pandemic.

  • Protecting the Environment - Margareth will take her years of local environmental activism to the state level and ensure that Massachusetts is addressing the climate crisis and ensuring communities are free from pollution and environmental hazards, so we can all live healthy lives. She will be a watchdog who continues to fight for funds to clean up pollluted sites in Framingham, and to prevent Framingham from further contamination.
  • Providing Housing Equity - Margareth believes every person deserves the opportunity to own their own home and prosper in our community. She will fight to make sure Framingham renters have the opportunity to become homeowners. She'll be an advocate to prevent overdevelopment from pushing Framingham residents out of our city. She will advocate for programs that will make first-time homeownership more accessible, and for seniors do downsize.
  • Supporting Public Education - As a former guidance counselor, Margareth knows that high-quality public education is the key to success for every child. Margareth will fight to keep the cap on charter schools, and to protect and expand the state education budget. She'll work to invest in public education fro every student in Framingham and in Massachusetts.
Immigration Reform is my personal political passion. I have lived on both sides of society, as an intellectual worker and as a manual laborer. More than ever, I understand the need for manual laboring workers to be present at every level of government. We, as manual laborers, are kept aside from any position that would allow us to legislate or to be part of the process; however, the structure, knowledge, and educational requirements are all barriers for entry to elected office. The structure excludes all those not able to have access to education opportunities, perpetuating financial dependency. That is one of the reasons I decided to face the challenges of being deaf, being a housecleaner, being an immigrant woman, and running for the high-level office of state representative. Our society needs to understand that the government should be organized to provide participation opportunities at every level, in every community, and to provide the tools that are needed for people to succeed.
