Margarita Lopez Torres is a judge of the Kings County Surrogate's Court in New York. She assumed office in 2006. Her current term ends on January 1, 2034.

Torres (Democratic Party) ran for re-election for judge of the Kings County Surrogate's Court in New York. She won in the general election on November 5, 2019.

Biography and Education

Torres received her B.A. degree from the City University of New York at Queens College in 1974 and her J.D. degree from Rutgers University School of Law in 1979. Prior to receiving her law degree, she worked as a teacher and substitute teacher in New York.[1]

Career

Torres began her legal career in 1979 as a law graduate for Manhattan Legal Services, Inc. She then joined MFY Legal Services in 1981, where she served as a staff attorney until 1985 and as managing attorney until 1987. From 1987 to 1989, she served as Assistant Corporation Counsel for New York City. In 1989, she became the Director of the Family Law Unit of Brooklyn Legal Services, Corp. A. She also served briefly in 1990 as an adjunct professor of the Women's Rights Litigation Clinic at Rutgers University School of Law. She then worked as Deputy General Counsel for N.Y.C.'s Human Resources Administration, serving in the Office of Legal Affairs, Division of Family and Children Services through 1992.

Torres's judicial career began in 1993, following her election to the New York City Civil Court of Kings County. She was re-elected to that position in 2002 and served there until her election to the Surrogate's Court. During this time, she was also assigned to the New York City Criminal Court of Kings County from 1996 to 1999, the Kings County Family Court from 1999 to 2001 and the Criminal Court again from 2001 to 2005. In 2006, she joined the Surrogate's Court.[1]
