Political career
Missouri Commissioner of Education (2015-2017;2018-2024)
Vandeven was appointed to the position of Missouri commissioner of education in November 2018.
She was previously appointed to the post in December 2014. She assumed office on January 1, 2015. Vandeven reported to and served at the pleasure of the State Board of Education, the body responsible for her appointment.[2] The board, which had five members appointed by Gov. Eric Greitens (R) in the previous four months, removed Vandeven on December 1, 2017, by a vote of 5 to 3. Greitens praised the move, saying, "Today, kids, teachers, and families won." Senate Minority Leader Gina Walsh (D) said of Vandeven's removal, "The removal of Dr. Vandeven is completely without merit, and anyone who cares about Missouri’s schools should be outraged. Dr. Vandeven challenged the status quo and got real results for Missouri students, teachers and taxpayers. It’s a shame to see her ousted by the governor in a political power grab."[3]
Appointments
