I’ve never held elective office, but I am running because I believe that we need to debate incumbent legislators and protest the high-rise market-rate housing, a gift to developers, and oppose the weakening of environmental laws proposed in our state legislature.

I'm an activist Democrat living in Berkeley, CA. with a Doctor of Public Health from UC Berkeley. I worked as a research social scientist for the State Health Department in environmental health, mental health and survey research; for Stanford in rural health care, for UC Davis and the State of Hawaii in health planning. After retirement, I produced political videos. As an activist, I've organized many events to educate the public and support my causes.I've researched mentally disabled populations, rural health care, toxic spills, cultural biases in IQ tests, the geographic distribution of medical care, and the need for mental health services.

I’ve lived in Berkeley since 1969, (except for two years in IL), raised four children as a single mother for 10 years, and love them and six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. I care about their futures.

I was born in San Francisco, grew up in Beverly Hills before it was an enclave for the rich; attended USC and UCLA. After my divorce I earned a B.ED. and M.A. at the University of Hawaii and a doctorate in Public Health at UC Berkeley.
  • Housing for all In California.
  • Save the environment, no fossil fuels.
  • Health care for all. Everyone should be able to access health care when they need it.
The need for housing for those with average and low incomes. Housing the unhoused. Be sure that all Californians have access to health care and are insured. Fix Prop 13 so that a corporation pays property taxes on its current property value, not its 1978 value. Make sure that all California kids have access to an excellent education. Train people to enter the trades at community colleges. Free tuition for Californians at State Universities.
Eleanor Roosevelt. She cared about people and was effective in getting laws to improve their lives. Frances Perkins who got us Social Security, unemployment insurance.
Integrity. Responding to constituents needs for infrastructure and services. Honesty. Rejection of special interests that are in contrary to the public good.
I am an expert researcher, writer, editor, grass roots activist and chaired many organizations, I am seriously concerned about housing, health care, education and whether people earn a living wage, and would work to improve their lives. I speed read, and like to get to the essence of issues.
Voting on legislation. Researching their need. Responding to constituents. Developing legislation to resolve problems and issues. Relating to fellow legislators.
Better housing for low income people; access to health care for all; excellent educational opportunities for all California kids; trades and expansion for community colleges, free tuition in state colleges for all Californians, quality long term care for seniors.
WWII. Pearl Harbor bombing. Hearing FDR announce on the radio that Dec. 7 was A Day of Infamy. 11 years old.
Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs. Maisie travels the world, is involved with every major historical event and enlarges and enlightens my information about it, she is a hero. I wish I could have been there.
Raising four kids as a single parent. After my divorce I earned a B.ED. and M.A. at the University of Hawaii and a doctorate in Public Health at UC Berkeley, getting educated with little money; as a woman having trouble finding work; as a professional woman getting published, respected. It's a struggle supporting unpopular causes: Women's Liberation, racial equality, being anti warfare and for peace, reducing smoking. Working for universal health care, fighting sexism, agism, racialism, LBGT rights.
Cooperation. Making sure that legislation is for the public good.
The environment and the heating planet. Housing for all. Earning a living wage, access to health care; excellent education for kids; long term care for seniors.
It is really important to have savvy legislators who can get things done. But they must have the political will to work for the public good.
The only way to successfully pass legislation is to work with other legislators, to know their views and experience, and to work together for the public good.
Frances Perkins, Secretary of Labor under FDR. She saw the need for services and was able to deliver them.
Elders living in senior housing suffer from a lack of oversight of management. They have power outages, lack of staff, bullying from workers, poor maintenance. And many simply lack housing in their old age.
You hear about the 80 year olds running the country, just wait until us 90 year olds take charge.
If the governor does not act in response to a natural disaster, the legislature must. In California we have earthquakes, fires, floods, rising sea levels, natural and man made disasters that require immediate response.
Compromise is essential for successfully passing legislation. We need to hear may points of view.
Fix Prop 13 so that the state and cities have money for services and education. Corporations should pay property taxes based on the current value of their properties, not 1978 taxes.
