The election replaced Xavier Becerra (D), who was appointed as California's attorney general.[2] Democrats Jimmy Gomez and Robert Lee Ahn were the top two vote-getters in a primary field of 23 candidates and advanced to the general election. Gomez and Ahn competed in the runoff election on June 6, 2017, when Gomez defeated Ahn by more than 20 percent, 60.1 percent to 30.9 percent.[3] The previous two elections in the district have also featured a general election contest between two Democrats.[4][5][6]

Ahn and Gomez participated in a candidate forum on May 25, 2017, where they discussed the Trump administration, infrastructure, job creation, healthcare, and local issues. During the forum, Ahn emphasized his legal and business background and knowledge of Korean relations, while Gomez highlighted his legislative experience in the California State Assembly and endorsements from progressive organizations like the Bernie Sanders-backed Our Revolution. In the fundraising race, Ahn outpaced Gomez, raising $353,000 between April 1 and May 17. His campaign capital was boosted by an additional $195,000 personal loan. In the same time period, Gomez raised $327,000.[7]

Campaign themes

2017

The following issues were listed on Cabildo's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Education: Maria believes that every child must have access to a quality education. Whether it is in an early learning setting, an 8th grade classroom or a community college campus, Maria will fight to protect and expand federal investments to help achieve equity within our education system.
  • Making Housing Affordable: A home is the foundation from which dreams and hope begin. No one knows this better than Maria, who spent over two decades fighting to ensure communities from Koreatown to East LA had access to stable, affordable homes in communities of opportunity. As founder and President of the East LA Community Corporation, Maria worked hard to address housing insecurity by raising and investing over $200 million in child-care centers, apartment buildings, single-family homes, and retail spaces. In Congress, Maria will fight for the highest possible funding level for housing programs, ensure equitable access to affordable housing, and reprioritize current federal spending.
  • Health: Maria believes that health equity is a hallmark of a strong community. As a member of Congress, Maria is committed to protecting the health of all, especially the health of those who are most vulnerable to the recent attacks on the Affordable Care Act and women’s reproductive rights.
  • Immigration: Maria is the proud daughter of immigrants. Through her housing development work, she has housed generations of immigrant families; helped immigrant families buy their first home and has fought to create economic self-sufficiency for immigrant communities on the East Side. In Congress, she will continue her track record of bringing government resources into the 34th Congressional District and fight against the targeting of our immigrant communities.
  • Jobs & Economic Development: Maria believes that strengthening the middle class is essential to our economic stability and prosperity. She understands that rising income disparity and job insecurity threaten to damage that stability for both workers and small businesses. For our economy to recover, we must help our small businesses thrive, innovate and reinvest in our communities. Maria will also fight hard for worker’s protection and job training for vulnerable populations to compete effectively in this economy and improve access to good paying jobs. She will promote common-sense solutions such as closing the gender pay gap and raising the federal minimum wage.
