Born in Mexico and raised in California, Maria is a mom and a strong and innovative leader in agriculture, tech, government, and nonprofit communities to ensure people and planet are at the center of solutions that improve the quality of life for everyone. For over 20 years, Maria has worked to improve healthcare, increase support for small business owners, increase affordable housing, build housing for children aging out of foster care, increase legal aid to immigrant families, create academic and career pipelines for farmworkers, provide every newborn in Santa Cruz County with a college savings account, and fight predatory lenders. I've worked with governments, corporations, growers, farmworkers, nonprofits, and policy makers across the U.S., California, and in our region to thoughtfully develop practical solutions that actually work to improve people's lives. I'm not a career politician. I get things done by focusing on what matters most - people and planet. I'm the only Democratic woman, only immigrant, only Latina, and only candidate in this race who will not accept corporate money. My personal commitment to service and my love of our communities is what compels me to run. Join me and let's work together to create opportunity for all.
  • I am the only Democratic woman, Latina, and only candidate who will not accept corporate money running for State Senate District 17.
  • People and Planet First!
  • Maria is not a career politician; she is someone who has worked on the ground to stand up for families on the Central Coast.
Climate Crisis

Two months ago, my 10-year-old daughter asked that we use less plastic to save the earth. No 10-year-old should have to carry the weight of saving our planet. It is up to us to address climate change, the most urgent problem facing us. It is an issue deeply impacting our planet and all of us that live on it. It critically affects our hospitality, agriculture, and energy industries.

Housing
We must ensure our families are not priced out of their family homes and neighborhoods. Too many of us are spending 50% or more of our income on housing or living in overcrowded conditions. I've spoken to parents who have seen their children and grandchildren move out of state because they could no longer afford to live here.

Healthcare

Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy. Even those with insurance coverage have exorbitant deductibles, forcing difficult decisions between meeting their medical care vs. other basic needs like food and shelter. Individuals living in our rural communities face life threatening illness while driving more than 60 miles to obtain needed care.
