My name is Maria Ordoñez and I’m an organizer, State Committee member, and progressive Democrat running for Assembly District 70. I’m a lifelong resident of Harlem, a product of the public school system, and graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Political Science.

Growing up in Harlem I have seen how our elected officials continuously left our communities behind. I have seen friends and neighbors be evicted, struggle to access quality healthcare, or have trouble making ends meet. When I began to organize for tenants rights in my building and began to get involved in politics, the more I saw that it didn’t have to be this way for our people. Our elected officials were and are still failing us in Harlem.

I’m running for Assembly because we need change Now! I’m fighting for truly affordable housing, fully funding our schools, and healthcare for all. It's time we fight for a United Harlem that's represented in Albany!
  • Truly affordable housing - Secure truly affordable housing, invest in NYCHA, protect renters, and ensure everyone can access housing they can afford.
  • Quality education for all - Fund our schools, invest in libraries, and tuition-free CUNYs & SUNYs.
  • Healthcare for all - Pass the NY Health Act so everyone can access healthcare at no cost. Address the homelessness and mental health crisis so they receive the support they need.
I'm really interested in co-governance and creating policy that includes our community and reflects Harlem's needs. Housing and healthcare policy are very important to me. We need to address the housing crisis by strengthening tenant protections and building more truly affordable housing. We need to address lack of access to healthcare by passing the NY Health Act and Coverage for All, so every New Yorker can access quality healthcare at no cost.
Standing for democracy, transparency and the community while advocating against corruption, corporate interests, and nepotism.
Co-governing with the community, leaders, and organizations to address our housing crisis, access to quality education, and healthcare access.
One of investment in our community so folks know that anyone no matter their background can be part of the political system. Everyone has a voice in our government and politics.
I will immediately co-sponsor the NY Health Act and publicly advocate for healthcare for all.
The New York Progressive Action Network (NYPAN), Tenants PAC, Citizen Action, Planned Parenthood 100% rating, Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, 504 Democratic Club, Voters for Animal Rights, Community Voices Heard, NYC Kids PAC, Streets PAC, and Marti Cummings (LGBTQ+ rights activist).
