Maria Rivera
Maria P. Rivera was an associate justice on the California First District Court of Appeal, Division Four. She was appointed by former Governor Gray Davis and took her oath of office on January 25, 2002. Rivera was retained by voters on November 5, 2002, and again in November 2006.[1] She retired in 2018.[2]
Education
Rivera received her B.A. from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1970 and her J.D. from the University of San Francisco Law School in 1974.[3]
Career
From 1974 to 1978, Rivera was an associate with the law firm Morrison & Foerster. She left the firm in 1978 to serve as a deputy district attorney for the City and County of San Francisco. Rivera was an assistant U.S. attorney in San Francisco from 1979 to 1981. She joined the firm McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen, formerly Van Voorhis & Skaggs, as a partner in 1981. Rivera was with the firm until her appointment to the Contra Costa County Superior Court bench in January 1997. She served as a superior court judge until her appointment to the California First District Court of Appeal in January 2002.[3]
