Biography

Mariah White was born in Richmond, Virginia. She served in the U.S. Army from 1988 to 2014. White received an associate degree in marketing from J. Sargent Reynolds Community College, a bachelor's degree in sports management from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2004, and two master's degrees from Strayer University in 2007 and 2020.

White's professional experience includes working in the government sector and in finance, management, food service, maintenance, strategic planning, marketing, and logistics management. She has also worked as a supply planner for Defense Logistics Agency and is a licensed B contractor. White has been affiliated with the Virginia Commonwealth University Alumni, the League of Women Voters-Richmond Chapter, Moms Demand Action, Carver Promise Mentor, the Carver Area Civic Improvement League, the Golden Key International Honor Society, the Trinity Baptist Church Civic Engagement Group, the Military Officers Association of America, and the American Legion - Post 144.[1][2]

A total of 22 candidates ran for the nine seats that were up for election, including incumbents J.E. Dawson Boyer (District 1), Jeff Bourne (District 3), Mamie Taylor (District 5), and Shonda Harris-Muhammed (District 6). District 9 incumbent Tichi Pinkney Eppes filed to run in the election but was seven signatures short of qualifying for candidacy.

In District 1, Boyer lost his bid for re-election to Elizabeth Doerr. In District 2, James Scott Barlow defeated Mariah White. Bourne was the only incumbent to win re-election by defeating challengers Jesse Perry and Kevin Starlings in District 3. Newcomer Jonathan Young overtook Barrett Hardiman, Irvine Reaves, and Sean Smith for the open District 4 seat. Taylor lost her seat to Patrick Sapini in District 5. Felicia Dionne Cosby defeated Harris-Muhammed for the District 6 seat. In District 7, Nadine Marsh-Carter defeated Kirsten Gray and Rick Tatnall. Dawn Page won the District 8 seat by defeating Tia Redd and Christopher Woody. Newcomer Linda Owen ran unopposed and won the District 9 seat after Pinkney Eppes was disqualified from the race.[3]

Mariah White is a mother, wife, mentor, and veteran. Mariah is a retired U.S. Army Major with 26 years of service, dedication, and leadership; she's also a Bronze Star recipient. Mariah was assigned twice as a U.S. Army Commander, responsible for the leadership and welfare of 800 soldiers. After retiring from the military, Mariah advocacy to stand up for education, became her priority. Mariah has volunteered numerous of hours at RPS's focusing on student's education and well-being. This allowed her to see that students had little or no resources. Mariah became the voice for many, many students whom she felt was underserved in the RPS system. Mariah has two wonderful adopted sons who attend Richmond Public Schools, this gives her a personal stake in the success of Richmond Public Schools for all students.
  • Mariah has a Master of Education with an emphasis in Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction. She also has a Master's in Supply Chain Management. Mariah has the unique skillsets and qualifications, that is essential and always needed for our school board.
  • Marah believes there are workable solutions available that will enhance equity in the 2nd District.
  • The last four years promises were made, and nothing has changed in the 2nd District school zone.

I am running for the 2nd District School Board, because I firmly believe it's the human and constitutional right of every child in the Richmond Public School System to be afforded the right to an excellent education regardless of background, obstacles, or economic status. I believe that every Richmond Public School System child is entitled to the best in building safety, technology equipment, quality, expert education and every opportunity to be prepared for college and a career.
