Marian C. Doherty (Democratic Party) was a judge for Countywide District of the New York City Civil Court Bronx County. She left office on January 29, 2022.

Doherty (Democratic Party) ran for re-election for the Countywide District judge of the New York City Civil Court Bronx County. She won in the general election on November 8, 2016.

Biography

Doherty received her B.A. from the City University of New York, Herbert H. Lehman College in 1977 and her J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 1980. She began her career in 1981 as an associate of the law firm of Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald & Doyle. She then worked as a partner of the law firm of Doyle, Doherty & Fleishell, P.C. from 1985 until she was appointed to the housing court in 1996.[1]

New York held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election was held on September 13, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wish to run in this election was July 14, 2016.[2] Incumbent Marian C. Doherty, Myrna Socorro, and Patsy Gouldborne defeated Robert D. Siano in the general election for three open seats on the Bronx section of the New York City Civil Court.

Judicial selection method

Judges of the New York City Civil Court are each elected to 10-year terms in partisan contested elections, with one exception. Judges of the New York City Housing Court are appointed by the Chief Administrative Judge and serve five-year terms. To serve on this court, a judge must be a state and city resident, at least 18 years old and practice in the state for 10 years. This court has a mandatory retirement age of 70 years old.[3]
