I've lived in Miami since I arrived from Cuba at age 14. I recently retired from my career in public service from Miami Dade County and the South Florida Water Management District. Most of my volunteer activity has been through the League of Women Voters and women's rights organizations. I have a Master of Public Administration. I have a daughter and two grandchildren.
  • Ensure the best education in the safest environment
  • Employment policies that will attract and retain exceptional teachers
  • Safety and security of our schools
Recovering from any academic slippage from the pandemic is a top priority to make sure no child is left behind in their academic achievement. Develop recruitment programs to attract not just teachers but also support staff. Advocate for expanded pre-K to help working families with small children. Develop communication programs to make sure that parents know about all the programs the schools offer. Review implementation of minority/small business programs in the procurement of goods and services. Make sure that every school has the same resources to ensure that every single child receives the same education in a welcoming and safe environment.
School board members are responsible for crafting the overall educational vision of a district’s public schools, from setting a school’s curriculum to creating and upholding board policy, approving the budget, hiring the superintendent, and addressing stakeholders' concerns. They are responsible for keeping an open door policy for parents.
District 4 is located in the Northwest corner of Miami-Dade County. This is a minority-majority community of predominantly Cuban-American residents. There are 45 public schools and 11 charter schools in the district.
Of importance is that I have the time to dedicate to the responsibilities of a Board Member since I'm retired. I plan to work on ways to increase funding to our schools to continue to improve on addressing the needs of all our students. Although we are an A rated district, there are children that would benefit from targeted programs.
