Being a public servant has always been my heart and soul and at the core of my life decisions. I earned my bachelors degree from the University of Central Florida, masters from Nova Southeastern University and was a National Board Certified Teacher. I am a 30+ years veteran educator of the Lake County Public Schools, teaching high school career and technical programs, at Alee Academy (an alternative school) and a coordinator of a mentoring program in the Miami-Dade Public Schools. My career began at Eustis High School and my retirement was at Mount Dora High School in 2017, during which time I was also the advisor for many Career and Technical Organizations such as DECA, FBLA, CECF, BPA and Key Club. My business background includes an entrepreneurial family which inspired me to own and operate a small business and to teach business. Upon retirement, I ran for the Eustis City Commission, proudly serving the citizens of Eustis for four years. My tenure included participation on the Community Redevelopment Agency and Florida League of Cities. I currently am a board member of the Eustis High School Construction Academy, the Lake County Entrepreneurship Academy and the countywide Career & Technical Advisory boards. My membership in the Kiwanis Club of Umatilla again allows me to give back to our students and the Eustis community as a board member of The Bay Street Players.
  • The Lake County School Board is the largest employer in the county with over 6500 teachers and staff. I served as an educator in this system and have a unique perspective that the other candidates do not. The ability to strive to be an "A" school district has to look to its greatest resources, teachers, and ways to hire and retain qualified professionals. The pay disparity was addressed for this coming school year but still is lacking for veteran teachers. The teacher mentoring program needs to become innovative, allow for creative incentives and look at full time mentor teachers to assist in the retention for both first year and veteran instructors.
  • Safety is always the number one priority for our students and staff. The .75 millage rate referendum for School Safety allowed for the hiring of additional school resource officers, guardians, nurses, and mental health professionals for each school. There is also a new school alert system being implemented in all schools that will allow a rapid response for a classroom emergency to a total school lockdown. The school board is again asking to renew this referendum on the November ballot. Please know that I will never sign any compact that says never advocate for a new tax. This is a tax on the property taxes of the citizens of Lake County for our Safe Schools and I am an advocate for the safety of all our students and staff.
  • Pupil funding from the state legislature is based on a decades old formula, Florida Education Funding Program (FEFP), which does not allow for the growth the district has experienced. This formula has said to have been addressed over the years and lobbying, legislative and other methods have failed to make our voices heard in Lake County. It is time to take a different tact and utilized our parental rights/involvement citizens to develop a grass roots coalition to aid in the changing of the FEFP formula.
As a 30+ veteran educator of career and technical education programs, I have seen the student success by equipping our students for the world of work. Every industry is clamoring for employees (trained or not) to fill their vacancies. We can be responsive to the industry needs and develop increased partnerships formed in education and training for those careers and skills needed by our students. Let's look at innovative ways, for the Lake County Schools, to assess what would be a compliment program for each school. Can we create a magnet program, like in the Golden Triangle area, that would draw students from a geographic area to a specialized program that can only be offered at one location? Curriculum, equipment, and instructors are the expenditures we can and must re-evaluate to attract business and industry and support the educational goals of our students.
I remember coming home to find my mother, who was pregnant with my youngest sibling, crying. I had never seen my mother crying and she told me that President Kennedy had been killed. I later understood that he was assassinated, from watching the tv coverage. I was six years old at the time.
Working in a car wash. Six weeks was the aha moment for me.
