My goal is simple: efficiently address the needs of local residents while creating sensible solutions with County departments to ensure a vibrant future for us all. This can be accomplished through community collaboration and practicing active and adaptive leadership styles, which incorporate broad representation of key community organizations and stakeholders.

I am deeply rooted in this community, not only as someone who grew up here, but also as an adult who is partnered to a fifth-generation Whidbey resident as we actively try to grow our family here. I want to confidently raise my children here knowing they will inherit a resilient and thriving island.

For the past few years, citizens in District 1 have expressed to me their frustration with stagnant leadership. I am running to change this because I believe our community deserves better. We need a community advocate who can champion local interests and issues while retaining and motivating Island County employees.

I am bringing back the passion, energy, and enthusiasm local residents have been missing in local government. I am committed to protecting local businesses, uplifting County staff, driving our economy, and fighting for our natural resources. The upcoming Island County Comprehensive Plan Update is projected to cover the coming 20 years. I will be here for those next 20 years alongside our community, raising my family, and working to establish a better future for us all.
  • Supporting our local businesses and workforce, including County employees. Right now so many of us are struggling to make ends meet, the cost of groceries continues to rise, rent has been an overwhelming burden for many years now, and the rising cost of necessary goods like gas are a huge burden to local families. We must address this at a local level. I joined the board of the Economic Development Council for Island County because I care about supporting local residents in a prosperous and sustainable future, and I will continue this mission as Commissioner. I will work to bolster local economic development programs so that small business owners have the support they need to enjoy a thriving island economy.
  • Climate resilience: I want to confidently know that my children, who will be sixth-generation Whidbey residents, will still be able to enjoy our local forests, farmlands, and beaches well into their own future (and my grandchildrens’ futures). I want all Island County residents to always have access to safe drinking water, especially in the face of issues such as sea level rise and water resource concerns. I will advocate for the use of effective and accurate research and data to make informed decisions for the protection of our beautiful rural character and natural resources. I won’t pretend that resiliency is an issue for a future generation to solve – I will act swiftly right now to keep addressing our community’s concerns.
  • Housing for everyone: In a recent survey that was prepared by the Island County Planning Department staff who are working on the Comprehensive Plan Update, Island County residents responded that, after “natural resource protection” and “rural character,” affordable housing was their highest priority. I will continue working with County departments, community organizations, and local advocates on issues that matter most to residents. Access to housing is essential to supporting our local economy and workforce. I personally understand how difficult and expensive it can be to find local housing, and I am committed to helping remove barriers so that our community can keep its talented workforce.
I believe I am in the unique position to understand the challenges of local government, as I grew up here watching Helen Price Johnson successfully navigate three terms as County Commissioner and have benefitted from her mentorship and endorsement for my candidacy. Balancing effective and empathetic representation of local residents’ needs while also managing government budget and operations highlights a key challenge of the job. I understand that I must address high-level issues of constituents and not get lost or waste time in the details that may not serve the public.
The commissioners are charged with overseeing county operations, financial and budgetary matters and the adoption of laws that regulate county growth, health, safety and welfare of its citizens. I remind voters that the operations component includes overseeing the directors of Public Health, Public Works, Planning and Community Development, and Human Services. Additionally, it is my expectation that I will be using my time outside of County meetings to meet with or correspond with constituents (I’ve pledged to be a Commissioner who is responsive to folks’ calls and emails), visit sites in the community where there are ongoing projects or ongoing problems, and championing the needs and goals of District 1.
We have hopes of raising sixth-generation Whidbey Island children here, and I want to confidently know they will inherit a vibrant and resilient island that I worked hard to cultivate for them.
Helen Price Johnson, Island County Democrats, NWPCWA, SEIU 1199NW, SEIU 925, IBEW Local 191, UFCW 3000
