Elections for the Nevada State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on June 10, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 14, 2014. Marilyn Dondero Loop defeated Garrett Leduff in the Democratic primary, while Patricia Farley defeated Lisa Myers and Clayton Hurst in the Republican primary. Jon Kamerath ran as an Independent American candidate. Farley defeated Dondero Loop and Kamerath in the general election.[2][3][4][5]
The Nevada State Senate was a battleground chamber that Ballotpedia identified as having the opportunity to switch partisan control in 2014. The Nevada Senate had a difference in partisan balance between Democrats and Republican of one seat, which amounted to 9 percent of the seats up for election in 2014. District 8 in the Senate was identified by Ballotpedia and the Las Vegas Review-Journal as a battleground district that could have determined control of the Nevada State Senate.[6] Incumbent Barbara Cegavske (R), who did not seek re-election due to term limits, ran for Secretary of State. Democrats had the opportunity to pick up the seat, but Assembly member Marilyn Dondero Loop (D) was defeated by Patricia Farley (R) in the general election.

2014
Dondero Loop's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[12]
Fighting for our Kids
- Excerpt: "Reducing class sizes is critical to learning. That’s why Marilyn helped pass a measure that will put funding towards reducing class sizes in kindergarten for the first time in Nevada’s history. As a former teacher, she knows that when classrooms are overcrowded, teachers can’t give the individual attention to each student that they deserve—and that’s why Marilyn fought for lower class sizes in the Assembly Education Committee in 2013."
Protecting our Community & Homes
- Excerpt: "Southern Nevada has been devastated by the housing crisis that swept through our Valley during the Great Recession. Marilyn has watched many of her friends and neighbors in District 8 struggle to keep their homes, frustrated with the burdensome bureaucracy obstacles banks and federal housing programs put in front of homeowners. As an Assemblywoman who represented an area with a high number of foreclosures, Marilyn got to work. That’s why she helped pass the Homeowner’s Bill of Rights during the 2013 Legislative Session."
Creating the Jobs of the Future
- Excerpt: "That’s why Marilyn supports establishing a UNLV medical school right here in Southern Nevada. It’s time we stop exporting our brightest students to other states and start increasing health care options for our community."
2012
Dondero Loop's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[13]
My priorities for the next legislative session will include:
- Strengthening our laws on mortgage fraud, Increasing access to credible counseling for home buyers in jeopardy of losing their homes, assisting renters being evicted from foreclosed homes.
- Establishing a Revenue Stabilization Fund to help eliminate the boom and bust economic cycles our state has been experiencing
- Better preparing every student for today’s workforce and providing career and technical education opportunities in our schools.
- Working to increase the availability of affordable housing.''

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

According to the Institute, "a legislator with a score above 50 is considered to be an ally of economic liberty."[15]
