Marion T. Pope, Jr.
Marion T. Pope, Jr. is a senior judge on the Georgia Court of Appeals. He was appointed to the court by Gov. Busbee on January 5, 1981 and he served as the Chief Judge from January, 1993 to December, 1994. He retired to senior status in 2002.[1]
He temporarily returned to the Georgia Court of Appeals on August 10, 2010 to work part-time until the end of the September 2010 term or until a replacement for former Judge Debra Bernes takes office.[2]
Biography and Education
Pope was born on September 28, 1927 in Thomaston, GA. After serving for two years in the Navy during World War II, he attended South Georgia College and then received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia. He received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Georgia in 1953 and his Master of Laws degree from the University of Virginia in 1988.[1]
Career
Pope began his legal career as a lawyer in Canton, GA, where he helped found and worked for the Cherokee Federal Savings Bank. He then served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1963 to 1966. He became a superior court judge in the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit on March 24, 1967 and he held this position until he was appointed to the appellate court in 1981.[1]
