My name is Maritza Gomez. I'm a first-generation Cuban American born In Miami, FL to Cuban exiles who fled Fidel Castro's murderous communist regime. I grew up in the 70's in a home/community of Cuban exiles where stories of Cuba pre/post Castro were part of our daily discourse. My father was a Cuban and later an American patriot. He was a Captain in the Cuban Army under Batista, a Cuban POW when Castro took over, and a member of the Bay of Pigs invasion. Being only 90 miles offshore, communism was too close for comfort and my dad also worked with the CIA and the paramilitary group (Alpha 66) attempting to overthrow Castro during the 70’s/80’s. While living, my parents were passionate about/grateful to the USA that opened its arms to them as they legally emigrated and assimilated to their new homeland. They reminded us DAILY that every country is not as blessed as the USA, and we should appreciate it and the freedoms it afforded us. We reiterated these same stories to our own children. Consequently, they too realize that as Reagan said, "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction". I am passionate about ensuring the same freedoms we all grew up with, continue to endure for future generations. If we lose America, our descendants won't be as fortunate as my parents/grandparents because there will be no other place to go. I love our country & will do whatever is necessary to preserve it and our American way of life.
  • I am committed to promoting transparency and accountability. I will ensure that tax dollars are spent wisely and stand firm on matters that serve the best interests of all residents. I will cut waste from the county budget and lower taxes to incentivize business growth and investment.
  • I will be tenacious, unwavering, and fiercely dedicated to defending all constituents rights, interests and ensuring their voices are heard. They will not be forgotten.
  • I will ensure that the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is not only getting the funding it deserves but the accountability and support it needs. On the heels of that, I will do whatever I can to ensure our children are safe in their schools and parents don't have to worry about them checking out objectionable books from their library. I will also stand for our girls so they don't need to worry about guys coming into their locker-rooms/bathrooms, pummeling them in the head with a volleyball or throwing them to the court during a basketball game.
I'm passionate about my fellow American citizens/stopping illegal immigration; seal the border, deport all illegal immigrants & redirect all misappropriated funds from illegals to our citizens, homeless & veterans. I stand with Law enforcement/first responders and support any measure that would help them do their jobs safely/effectively. I'm passionate about our kids, school choice and parental rights. Let's give our kids the quality education and skills they need to lead our nation into the future and leave the parenting to parents. I'm passionate about protecting life from womb to tomb and providing resources to women that would ultimately save babies. I'm passionate about protecting all our rights including 2nd Amendment.
Jesus. Because if we can all operate in love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance, we are loving our neighbor as ourselves (which is the second greatest command) and this world would be a much better place!
I would recommend Maximo Alvarez's 2020 speech at the Republican National Convention. Maximo was born in Havana, Cuba. He was sent to the United States as an unaccompanied 13 year old child by his parents during Operation Pedro Pan fleeing communism and went on to achieve his American Dream. He spoke about how he "had seen people...movements...ideas like this before". he goes on to say how he "heard the empty promises of Fidel Castro" and could never forget those who grew up with him and looked like him. How they suffered, starved and died "because they believed those empty promises" and "swallowed the communist poison pill". He goes on to say how the Democratic policies of "spread the wealth, free education, free healthcare, defund the police, trust the socialist state more than your family..." didn't sound "radical to his ears" but "familiar". This is why Maximo came. This is why my family came. This is why I'm conservative. This is why I love my country. This is why I believe in freedom. This is why I will fight to protect those freedoms. As Maximo said "It is up to us to decide our fate...to choose freedom over oppression". If we lose America, "there is no other place to go".
I know it sounds cliché-ish, but honesty, integrity, accountability, and transparency are paramount. A person of their word and someone who says what they mean and means what they say. Someone who isn't afraid to ask questions, think outside the box and challenge the status-quo. Someone who is not afraid to stand alone.
I hold myself to a high ethical standard and I've always said with me, "what you see is what you get". I don't give up and am relentless when it comes to standing up and speaking out for those who trust me.
First and foremost, to conduct oneself to the highest standard of integrity and accountability that leaves no room for anyone to question your actions or motives. Furthermore, to understand the needs of the residents who trusted us with their vote and voice. To protect them, their families and their tax dollars.
I would like people to remember me as someone who loved The Lord, who loved my family, who loved to help people, who stood for truth and integrity, who loved to laugh and someone who ultimately made a difference for good.
Elvis Presley's death. I was 9 years old. The first political event I remember would be the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1979.
My first job was when I was 12. I delivered newspapers on my bicycle. I did that for about a year. My first "real" job was with American Express. I started as a data entry clerk and through promotions ended up as a credit analyst. I was with Amex for 11 years.
Yahweh Se Manifestará by Oasis Ministry and the English cover version of that same song entitled Yahweh Will Manifest Himself by New Beginnings Christian Family Church (NBCFC) out of South Africa.
I didn't come from the best home environment and didn't have a support system, so I'd say growing up I struggled with self doubt. In fact, due to that, I didn't get my Bachelor's Degree until I was 51. But I know I was an inspiration to my own kids, younger kids in all my classes, and older friends of mine.
I don't know if it's little known, but commissioners appoint people to different offices such as the county attorney, county clerk and county manager and tax administrator. And in order to do that you need commissioners who are not only good judges of character, but commissioners with an unwavering commitment to the residents of Guilford County, their advancement, their prosperity, safety and the ultimate success of the county as a whole.
Beneficial? Sometimes. Necessary? No. Sometimes too much time in the political arena can be a hindrance and can cloud one's judgement.
Common sense, courage, boldness, humility, critical thinking and ethics. Empathy and understanding. A good judge of character. An ability to listen and communicate while not dismissing things we may not necessarily agree with and the courage to stand up for truth even if that means we're standing alone. A servant's heart and an ability to place the needs of our county residents above any personal success, agenda or ambition.
How do you make a tissue dance?
Put a little "boogie" in it!
Financial transparency and government accountability are indispensable if we expect any kind of improvement in our community. Without transparency we can't provide information to the residents we serve. That's a dis-service to them, ourselves and our community as a whole.
