Education - Unfortunately, the current state of education in Arizona is a disaster. Our public schools need every dime they can get the reality is that, even though Prop 123 has passed and teachers will get much needed raises, schools are still being forced to accept about 70 percent of money the court ordered the state to pay years ago. Until we can get Democratic majorities in the state house and senate, we need to start thinking about ways to support and improve our public schools without relying on the Republican-controlled legislature. The community schools model - where schools are a central part of the community and in addition to academic services they provide youth, adult and community development, and health and social services - is one that I am passionate about supporting and working to develop in our district. The Arizona Education Association is beginning to have discussions with community leaders to establish a pilot program and I plan on being engaged in that effort. Supporting Small Business - As a small business owner, I know that small and medium sized businesses are the true job creators and the backbone of our state economy. As your State Senator I will work everyday to lower the obstacles faced when starting a small business and create an environment that allows entrepreneurs to thrive. As light rail comes to South Phoenix in the coming years, we need to make sure that our local small business owners and entrepreneurs are the ones at the center of the revitalization of our district. I support bills like HB2009 introduced by Rep. Mark Cardenas, that would give veteran-owned businesses an edge when competing for state contracts. Instead of giving huge corporations millions of dollars in tax cuts every year, we need to explore creative ways to support our local small businesses. Voting Rights - As a lifelong Democrat, I firmly believe that the right to vote is as fundamental as any in this country. It is a right that deserves to be protected at all costs and expanded whenever possible. Sadly, almost every legislative session features bills designed and intended to limit access to the ballot. If elected, fighting back against legislation that would disenfranchise voters in any way will be a top priority of mine. In addition, I will absolutely support any efforts to make voting easier and more accessible to all eligible people. Sen. Martin Quezada has introduced a number of excellent bills that would require colleges and universities to have on-campus voting, extend the hours that voting centers are open on election day, make it easier for Independents to vote in presidential primary elections, among other measures. When people are engaged and aware of the decisions that are being made on their behalf by elected officials, and hold them accountable, Arizona is stronger and more reflective of the state we all want. Environment - Our District has long been a dumping ground for all sorts of heavy industry. There is no reason that the people of South Phoenix should be subject to the types of environmental and public health hazards that exist, from disproportionate air pollution to exposure to hazardous and toxic chemicals released or mishandled by large corporations in loosely regulated industries. I will fight to ensure the people of our District are able to live and raise their families in safe and healthy communities. I also believe that the solar industry provides an incredible opportunity to combat some problems often faced by working class families by providing jobs that pay living wages, reducing pollution from industrial power plants, and reducing high energy bills. If elected, I will work to support programs that incentivize people in my district to go solar and oppose any more measures to restrict the adoption of solar. Water is another issue that I believe deserves a huge amount of attention. It was recently announced that Lake Mead, the nation's largest water reservoir, reached an all-time low during the current long-term drought we're experiencing. We need to start having a serious dialogue about how we can reduce our water use and protect the long-term viability of our region. Accessibility - State government shouldn't just be transparent, it should be accessible. District 27 deserves a State Senator that not only shares their values but is approachable and easy to get ahold of. This District deserves a State Senator that is active and engaged in the community and one that knows her constituents, fights for their interests, and hears and responds to their concerns. If I can earn your support, I promise to be that State Senator.[1] |
