Campaign themes

2016

Barrionuevo's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

  • FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION:

The United States of America is the greatest country on the face of the earth and has the best government ever organized by mankind. Americans working together in defense of life, liberty, and property has made this country the greatest on earth. We need to keep America great by collaborating and cooperating with all parties, races, creeds, nationalities, genders, and sexual orientations.

  • ESTABLISH JUSTICE:

Colorado incarcerates approximately 20,000 men and women, expends over $30,000 per inmate per year in taxpayer dollars for an annual total of $600,000,000, and owns a recidivism rate above 50%. That’s a failing return for an expensive and important taxpayer investment. We have to do more than just incapacitate criminals; we must rehabilitate them.

  • INSURE DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY:

Marijuana has already been legalized and medicinal marijuana has helped men, women, children, and soldiers alike. However, we should be vigilant in protecting youth from seeking marijuana as a recreational activity.

  • PROVIDE FOR THE COMMON DEFENSE:

Colorado Springs is known for its strong military foundation. With five military installations within our area, priority should be given to Colorado Springs for veteran benefits. For example, the VA should have an increase in quality staffing and in state-of-the-art facilities and a decrease in “red tape” and unnecessary delays in providing care for our veterans.

  • PROMOTE THE GENERAL WELFARE:

When businesses thrive, communities soar. Businesses already face too many stumbling blocks to success. Business license fees should be done away with. Local businesses should receive priority bidding on public projects so they can compete with larger outside corporations. If local businesses are hired for local public projects, then accountability and performance will increase.

  • SECURE THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY TO OURSELVES AND OUR POSTERITY:

Fiscal responsibility is more than a theory, it's the right way to maintain our personal budgets, our households, and our government. We and our posterity do not deserve a bankrupt government. Wasteful spending and unnecessary taxation should be done away with. It’s time to create an incentive for government to spend less and do more with our tax dollars.[2]
