Mark Belton
Mark P. Belton was the Maryland secretary of natural resources from 2015 to 2019. He was appointed by Gov. Larry Hogan (R) on February 13, 2015, and sworn in on March 27 following his confirmation by the Maryland Senate. He succeeded Joseph Gill in the office.[1][2] Belton served until February 2019, when he left office to work for Charles County, Maryland.[3]
Prior to his appointment as head of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Belton served as assistant secretary of the department in charge of the natural resources police and other agency support functions from 2003 to 2005.[2]
Biography
Belton holds a B.S. from the United States Naval Academy and an M.B.A. from Regis University. He also graduated from the United States Naval War College, College of Distance Education, and the Advanced Joint Professional Military Education program at the Joint Forces Staff College.[1]
Belton served over three decades in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves, and was a Navy Rear Admiral. During his active duty tenure, he was deployed to Kosovo and Iraq. He retired from the military in 2014 as a deputy commander, Naval Supply Systems Command.[1]
In addition to his experience as assistant secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Belton had served as county administrator for three different counties—two in Maryland and one in Virginia—and as executive director, Pride of Baltimore, Inc., as of 2015.[1]
