Mark Brewer is a lawyer with the Detroit-based firm Goodman Acker. From 1995 to 2013, Brewer was the chair of the Democratic Party of Michigan.[1]

Career

After graduating form Stanford Law School in 1981, Mark Brewer went to work under Michigan Supreme Court Justice Charles Levin and was admitted to practice law in Michigan in 1983. As a practicing lawyer, Brewer specializes in "union-side labor, election and campaign finance law" while also providing political consulting services to candidates for office, according to his firm Goodman Acker.[1] Before becoming chair of the Democratic Party of Michigan in 1995, Brewer worked for and became partner at Sachs Waldman, a Detroit-based union-side law firm.[2]

In 2013, Brewer's seat as chair was challenged by Lon Johnson. According to Michigan Radio, the opposition to Brewer was based on "a widespread feeling that Brewer has failed to recruit strong candidates."[3] In a 2013 interview, Brewer claimed that the lack of seats gained was a consequence of redistricting, saying, "We have good candidates, we’re right on the issues, we’re adequately resourced (though we could always use more money,) but last year, had the districts not been gerrymandered, we would now be in control of the state House and we would have picked up more Congressional seats."[4] On February 23, 2013, at the state Democratic Party convention in Detroit, Brewer withdrew from the race for chair, and Lon Johnson was elected to the position.[5]

After leaving the leadership of the state party, Brewer returned to practicing law full-time with the Detroit firm Goodman Acker. According to Crain's Detroit Business, Brewer's hiring was the first campaign finance position for the personal injury law firm. Brewer told the magazine, "In this position I can act as the lawyer for a campaign, handle management of a campaign or fill any of a number of roles that fall in between."[2]
