Mark Ellis was a candidate for Position 1 representative on the Shawnee Mission School District Board of Education in Kansas. He was defeated in the general election on April 7, 2015.

In 2014, Ellis questioned the district's sex education curriculum after his daughter showed him a picture of a poster for the class. He has stated the issue was one of his motivations for seeking election to the board.[1]

Campaign themes

2015

Ellis provided the following statements on his campaign website:

EDUCATION DOLLARS MUST ACTUALLY REACH THE CLASSROOM

Currently, fewer than 65% of Kansas education dollars reach the classroom. That must change! Putting our kids first means putting our tax dollars directly into the classroom where our kids benefit most.

TEACH SKILLS TO SUCCEED: A K-12 CURRICULUM FOR ACHIEVEMENT & OPPORTUNITY
Our kids need skills to not only prepare for college or a technical education – reading, critical thinking and math; but also the skills to tackle life – civics, communication skills, and personal finance. Putting kids first means preparing them to succeed.

PARENTS, TEACHERS & CHILDREN. PERIOD.
Our school district is top heavy with administration, stripping funding for new teachers and classroom resources. And, too often, the district blindly adopts trendy national initiatives that fail our Kansas kids. Putting kids first means putting teachers and parents in charge to meet the needs of individual children.[4]
