I am a life-long Hoosier and grew up in Southern Indiana. My mom was a high school teacher and guidance counselor. My father was an engineer for Cummins Engine Company. I am a 1992 graduate of Purdue University and worked for over 20 years in Hospitality Management and development. For the past several years I have worked in healthcare management and as a private consultant for a hotel company. My career in healthcare and hospitality has been about helping people and my community. To that end, I've seen the role government has in providing opportunity to citizens for a better life while also ensuring that businesses have the atmosphere that allows them to flourish. The most significant role I play is that of father to my daughter. She is my biggest supporter and the reason I work hard to be a better person for Indiana every day.
  • I believe my background in healthcare has uniquely prepared me to tackle issues like high prescription prices, mental healthcare, and affordability. Healthcare policy will be critical during this uncertain time.
  • As a child of a public school educator, I grew up seeing the impact education has in our future. Education is at the heart of our commitment to our children's future.
  • I believe as a state we need to commit to protecting our environment by protecting our natural resources, ensure clean water and air standards, and allow investment in renewable energy such as solar.
One of my great areas of concern is our policies as it relates to our seniors. I believe we have a moral obligation to ensure seniors have the best quality of life possible. We know that this population will grow tremendously in the coming years. While other states have moved aggressively to address this, Indiana has not. I would like to see our state expand home health options, address our nursing shortage, and high prescription drug prices.
Indiana has a citizen legislature by design. For our legislature to represent citizens to the best, we need legislatures from different backgrounds, and bring this expertise to the statehouse. I do believe our elected officials need to have a background in public service. Because at it's heart, that is the most important role that government fills.

Candidate Connection

Mark Hinton participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 7, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Mark Hinton's responses follow below.[3]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Protect public education and ensure that teachers and administrators have a voice in the future of educating our children. Expanding Pre-K as a voluntary option for all children in Indiana.

2) Close the gender wage gap in Indiana, which is one of the worst in the nation.
3) Increase and ensure availability of healthcare services to all Hoosiers. Address the current and future healthcare worker shortage and address infant mortality death rate.[4][5]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Public education and healthcare. Both issues are really about the future of our state. Without proper educational opportunities, our children will be at a disadvantage in their economic future. Healthcare, because it affects everyone as we get older.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[5]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Mark Hinton answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty, transparency and the ability to consider all viewpoints[5]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I feel my background in the hospitality industry gives me experience that will be of great value. 1. General business acumen. 2. Hospitality is at it's core, a business about serving people and solving problems. 3. It allowed me to see first hand all different types of people and their needs.[5]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To always seek to make life better for the people that you serve.[5]
