Mark Jerrell is serving in his second term on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners representing District 4, which comprises the eastern part of Mecklenburg County. He is actively engaged in the community and is focused on efforts to support social justice, equity and improving the lives of all people in Mecklenburg County. He serves on the Inter-Governmental Relations Committee (Chair), Economic Development, Environmental Stewardship and Health and Human Services committees. Mark is committed to building bridges and breaking down barriers and ensuring that resources are accessible for the most vulnerable residents. Although serving in his first elected office, he has significant experience in managing and consulting for candidates and elected officials to include, judicial, city council, county commission and congressional candidates. Mark is an entrepreneur, proud veteran (U.S. Army Reserve) and holds a B.A. in political science and M.B.A.
  • Affordable Housing - Affordable Housing is the biggest threat to the quality of life for our most vulnerable residents. We are rapidly producing two distinct communities; one made up the “haves” and the other made up of the “have nots”. Continuing the current course will lead to catastrophic results for the future of our community and residents. People need and deserve a safe and affordable place to live. It is the role of government to work to remove the barriers and ensure a level playing field for all residents.
  • Education - To break the cycles of poverty and address institutional inequities, our community must be committed to leveraging education as the great equalizer for our most vulnerable citizens. College & Career Readiness are essential components of our approach that will produce a highly trained and skilled workforce and inevitably yield high quality standards of living for those that choose the path of career readiness and skilled trades over the traditional college degree route. Comprehensive strategies around education are the primary factors that will lead people out of poverty, expand economic opportunity, and create a competitive and thriving workforce.
  • Economic Mobility - The County Commission is directly responsible for impacting the quality of life of individuals in our community. It is imperative that we focus on issues of poverty, education, access to resources, and institutional structures that create inequity among our most vulnerable populations.
Mark is passionate about issues of equity, education, affordable housing, environment, social justice, economic mobility, parks and open space, and ensuring that we have relevant programming for all residents. Mark is also focused on ensuring that minority-owned businesses, seniors, working families and students have the opportunity and resources needed to experience a high quality of life.
