He was appointed to the position on April 10, 2015. His predecessor, Interim Director Jack Peterson, held the role following Donald Butler's retirement on September 30, 2013.[1][2]

Killian was born in Mesa, Arizona. Killian served previously as the director of the Arizona Department of Revenue, as well as served 14 years in the Arizona State Legislature. Killian has been a licensed commercial real estate broker for over 32 years, specializing in the management of commercial real estate. He also is involved in family farming and ranching enterprises, overseeing the stewardship of 1,700 acres of Arizona farm land. He chairs both the Green Reservoir Flood Control district and the Santa Cruz River Alliance, and has served on the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) since 2010.[2][3]

Killian also served on the Arizona Board of Regents until his departure from the board on October 1, 2015. Killian cited his heavy workload at the Department of Agriculture as the primary cause of his resignation from the Board of Regents, but he had also clashed with Gov. Doug Ducey over university funding.[4]

In announcing the state’s new agriculture chief, Governor Ducey said, “Mark brings decades of unique public service and private sector experience, and his extensive and successful background in farming and ranching will be hugely valuable in this role. He’s a welcome addition to this department and our administration.”[2][6]
