Lopez obtained a B.A. and M.A. in political science from California State University, Fullerton.[1] He works as deputy chief of staff to Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson and has previously interned with U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.) and served as a policy adviser to Orange County Supervisor Chris Norby.[1][2]

Lopez was appointed by Anaheim Mayor Pro Tem Lucille Kring to the Anaheim Sister City Commission, a 15-member body that advises the city council on its relationships with sister cities Mito, Japan and Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.[3]

The city of Anaheim, California, held elections for city council on November 8, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was August 12, 2016. Because of a switch from at-large to by-district elections, four of the six city council seats were up for election.[4][5] Steve Faessel defeated Mark Lopez, Donna Acevedo-Nelson and Sandra Angel in the Anaheim City Council District 5 general election.[6]

On his 2016 campaign website, Lopez highlighted the following issues:[8]

Mark opposes the $500 million hotel subsidy giveway to wealthy developers. Our tax dollars should be used to benefit Anaheim residents NOT special interests!

As our councilman, Mark's priorites include increasing parks and open space in Anaheim and enhancing existing civic amenities for all residents.

He will fight to reduce the rise in crime and threats to community safety through collaboration with residents, all levels of law enforcement and other stakeholders.

Mark is committed to introducing solutions for improved mobility through traffic and parking solutions for District 5 residents![9]
