Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated Maryland's U.S. Senate race as safely Democratic. In the U.S. Senate race in Maryland, incumbent Barbara Mikulski chose to retire, leaving the seat open in 2016. The election attracted a large number of Democratic, Republican and independent candidates. Chris Van Hollen (D) defeated Kathy Szeliga (R), Arvin Vohra (Libertarian), Margaret Flowers (Green), and several write-in candidates in the general election on November 8, 2016. Van Hollen defeated nine other Democrats to win the nomination, and Szeliga defeated 13 other Republicans in the primary. The primary elections took place on April 26, 2016.[2][3]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on McNicholas' campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Qualifications: For the last 14 years I have been in the mortgage industry helping people realize the American Dream of home ownership. I love getting out, into our communities, meeting people and helping them accomplish their goals. It does not matter if it is a young couple just getting started or if it is someone who has made it through some tough situations to accomplish a lifelong goal of homeownership; it is awesome to see someone receive the keys to their very first home.
  • Economy: What I like about Economics is when the variables are measurable the results are consistent and predictable. If you lower prices you will sell more widgets. When governmental regulations and taxes are introduced to a free market economy it comes with a cost and it is rare for a company to absorb the entire cost. The increase is normally split by, or fully passed on to, the consumer in the price of the product or service.
  • Foreign Policy: The most important foreign policy issue facing our country yesterday, today and tomorrow is Homeland Security. We have to make sure we are guarded against any attacks against our country. This means securing our borders and increasing our defense spending. With the evolution of drones and unmanned aircrafts patrolling the borders can be done well while limiting the risk associated with using only border patrol agents.
  • Immigration: This is another issue we face in our country today where the best answer requires much patience. We currently have 11 million illegal immigrants living in the US. This did not happen overnight and the issue will not be resolved overnight either.
  • Environment: It is not climate change or deforestation that keeps me up at night it is the labels on the back of the food we eat every day. We have to take a close look at the FDA and its practices along with the fertilizers and pesticides we use to produce the food we eat and feed our children.
