Campaign themes

2016

Merritt's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

Taxes and Spending

As a father of three children, Mark is concerned that the next generation will not have the opportunity to work and raise a family in this state. For too long, our elected leaders have avoided making the tough decisions to fix Connecticut’s fiscal problems. Mark knows that the patchwork budgets passed by our legislator do nothing to help the long term future of Connecticut. Mark will advocate for strategic and responsible spending, and stop the tax increases that force people to leave our state.

Jobs and Economy

Connecticut can be a state that has tremendous economic opportunity and a thriving business community, but first we need to change the way that our state government treats our job creators. High taxes, burdensome regulations, and uncertainties with our state budget are driving jobs out of Connecticut. Large companies like GE, Aetna, and our small businesses as well, will continue to move to other states if we do not act soon. Mark will fight to reduce taxes, fees, and job killing mandates placed on businesses. He will also work towards strategic state budgets, that will give job creators confidence that Connecticut is a friendly state to run a business.

Education

Every child deserves access to a quality education. But when the legislators in Hartford play politics with municipal education funding, it is the students who pay the price. Mark will work to make sure that each town in our district gets the appropriate funding.

Healthcare and our Hospitals

During the most recent budget negotiations, hospitals were unfairly targeted as a way to reduce state spending. Instead of tackling the real problems within the state budget, the organizations that care for our sick were used as scapegoats. Mark has been working with businesses and individuals for the past 5 years helping educate on the healthcare challenges we face. As your State Senator, Mark will fight to make sure that hospitals are fully funded and can continue to take care of those who need it most.

Taking Care of our Seniors

Through his role at Nationwide, Mark understands first hand how important it is to protect our seniors. Tax increases and a high cost of living have made it hard for retirees in Connecticut, especially those living on a fixed income. Connecticut is also one of the only states that has an income tax for social security benefits. As your State Senator Mark will introduce a bill to eliminate this tax, and promises you that he will always fight for the best interest of Connecticut seniors.[2]
