Mark Raymond Hornak is the chief judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court in 2011 after being nominated by President Barack Obama. Hornak became chief judge in 2018.
Early life and education
A native of Homestead, Pennsylvania, Hornak earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1978 and his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1981.[1]

On December 1, 2010, President Barack Obama nominated Hornak to a seat on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania vacated by Donetta Ambrose. The American Bar Association rated Hornak Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Under provisions of Rule XXXI, paragraph six of the standing rules of the Senate, Hornak's nomination was returned to the president on December 22, 2010. President Obama resubmitted the nomination on January 5, 2011. Hearings on Hornak's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 22, 2011, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on July 21, 2011. Hornak was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on October 19, 2011, and he received his commission the same day. Hornak became chief judge of the court in 2018.[1][2][3][4]
