Charge of misdemeanor battery (2021)
Samsel was arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery on April 29, 2021. He is accused of alleged battery against a student while serving as a substitute teacher at Wellsville Unified School District 289.[2] According to a now-deleted Facebook post, Samsel said, "I’m doing my best folks, and I am genuinely sorry for any pain or confusion this may cause anyone. But I will put my hand on the Bible right now and swear that I didn’t do anything wrong...Those kids are the LAST people on the planet I would ever do anything to intentionally hurt. I’ve known most of them for years, some for over a decade."[3]
Samsel pleaded not guilty and appeared in court on July 12, 2021.[4] His lawyers sought a plea deal in August 2021. The court accepted the plea deal and sentenced Samsel to 30 days for each of the three counts of misdemeanor battery, which Samsel pleaded guilty to on September 13, 2021. He was also sentenced to 12 months of probation. The balance on the total 90-day jail sentence was suspended because of time already served.[5][6][7]
Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
