“ | Education
My life’s work is teaching and I will bring the knowledge and insight from my experience in the classroom needed to the Statehouse to improve our schools. The world is an ever changing place and we need to focus on giving our students the skills needed to thrive in the 21st Century. We need to give parents the power to make the choice as to where their child attends and guarantee a great school with great teachers. We need to improve our high school’s non-waivered graduation rate with an emphasis on more math and science courses. We need to ensure that the post-secondary needs of all Hoosiers whether through a university, community college, or vocational school, are met. We must invest in our schools, from pre-K through higher education, to create a smarter and better society. Fiscal Responsibility Thanks to the outstanding leadership from the Statehouse, Indiana has become the envy of the Midwest. We can, and should, proudly boast our AAA credit rating, a claim few other Midwestern states can make. We have produced a balanced responsible budget year in and year out over the last decade, something that I will ensure continues. It is a great responsibility to spend the taxpayers' hard earned dollars and I will fight to make sure that every taxpayer dollar is wisely spent. Jobs Last year, nearly 50,000 jobs were created in Indiana. Our state’s unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in the last five years and lower when compared to any of our neighboring states. But we still have too many Hoosiers who are out of work and unemployed. Despite what headwinds that may come from Washington, we need to continue to cultivate and maintain the great business environment that Indiana possesses. Whenever a job is created in this nation, whether from a Fortune 500 company or from a burgeoning small business, I want that job creator to think of Indiana first. I will do all that I can from the Statehouse to ensure that Indiana maintains and grows upon its status as a business friendly, pro-growth, pro-job state. Taxes I will fight to preserve, maintain, and protect low taxes. States like California, Illinois, and Michigan are burdened with heavy taxes that stifle growth and job creation. For Indiana to continue to be a leader in creating jobs, taxes cannot be so cumbersome as to burden businesses and Hoosiers who are trying just to pay their bills.[2][3] |
