Mark B. Simons is an associate justice on the California First District Court of Appeal, Division Five.[1] He was appointed by former Governor Gray Davis and took the oath of office in January 29, 2001.[2] Simons was retained by voters in 2014. His current term expires on January 3, 2027.[3][4]
Education
Simons earned his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1967. He received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1970.[2]
Career
After law school, Simons served as law clerk to Federal District Court Judge Alvin Rubin in the Eastern District of Louisiana. From 1971 to 1973, Simons was an associate with the law firm Cooley Godward. Simons served as deputy public defender in Contra Costa County from 1973 until his appointment to the Mt. Diablo Municipal Court in 1980. He was elevated to the Contra Costa Superior Court in April 1995, where he served as presiding judge in 1999 and 2000. In January 2000, Simons was appointed to the First District Court of Appeal, Division Five. He previously served as an adjunct professor at Hastings College of the Law.[2]
