I’m Marla Fernandez-Benavides, a candidate for Colorado State Legislature HD3. As a first-generation American, my family’s journey from Cuba taught me the value of freedom and resilience. With a background in immigration, personal injury, and litigation law, along with expertise in mediation, I’m committed to serving our diverse community. Fluent in English and Spanish, I bridge cultural divides to ensure justice for all. Let’s build a future where every voice is heard and every dream can flourish. Join me in this journey to make history.
Constitutional principles and economic freedom.
Looking up to Mary, Jesus, and a host of other saints such as St. Teresa, St. Elizabeth, St. Catherine, Joan of Arc, and Mother Teresa is truly inspiring. Their examples of obedience, humility, patience, and unwavering faith in God serve as guiding lights for many. Their lives were marked by selflessness, compassion, and a dedication to serving others, even in the face of adversity. Their legacies continue to inspire countless individuals around the world, including myself, as I strive to follow their examples and live a life that is pleasing to God.
For a comprehensive understanding of my political philosophy, I recommend delving into St. Thomas Aquinas’s ‘Summa Theologica’ in Latin, exploring St. Augustine’s ‘City of God’ and treatises on Free Will and Freedom of Choice, studying Aristotle’s works on politics and ethics, and examining both the Federalist Papers and the Anti-Federalist Papers. Additionally, exploring case law on individual rights predating 1865 provides a historical context for understanding the evolution of legal principles and the protection of liberties. These foundational texts offer rich insights into my commitment to upholding constitutional principles, individual rights, and the pursuit of justice.
For me, the most crucial characteristics for an elected official are integrity, empathy, and a commitment to serving the best interests of their constituents. It’s about more than just rhetoric; it’s about being able to actively listen, collaborate, and think critically to find solutions that benefit everyone. As a trained mediator and experienced paralegal, I bring a unique skill set that emphasizes effective communication, critical thinking, and legal expertise. I believe in transparency, accountability, and working collaboratively to address the challenges facing our community. By prioritizing these principles, I aim to uphold the trust of those who have elected me and work tirelessly to represent their voices in the legislature.
My extensive background as a paralegal has equipped me with skills in legal research, analysis, and the application of law. Additionally, my training as a mediator enables me to excel in negotiations and conflict resolution. I deeply value family and education, which drives my dedication to advocating for policies that support family autonomy and educational freedom. With real-world experience, a commitment to constitutional principles, and a passion for serving my community, I believe I possess the qualities necessary to be a successful officeholder.
As someone who loves to read, write, and think like a lawyer, I believe the core responsibilities of someone elected to office are multifaceted. Firstly, it’s essential to uphold the principles of a Constitutional Republic and represent the interests of the constituents faithfully. This involves drafting and analyzing legislation, conducting thorough research, and advocating for policies that align with the vision of our Founding Fathers. Additionally, effective communication skills are paramount for fostering transparency, engaging with constituents, and collaborating with fellow legislators to enact meaningful change. Furthermore, maintaining integrity, ethical conduct, and accountability are non-negotiable aspects of public service. As a passionate advocate for justice and legal integrity, I am committed to fulfilling these responsibilities with dedication, diligence, and a deep sense of duty to the people I serve.
I aspire to leave a legacy of restored legal integrity and liberty. Through my commitment to upholding constitutional principles, advocating for individual freedoms, and fostering a society where justice prevails, I aim to leave a lasting impact that ensures the preservation of our fundamental rights for generations to come.
Experiencing the Challenger disaster while in junior high school was a defining moment in my life. The tragic event, which occurred on January 28, 1986, profoundly impacted me and my peers, serving as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety in exploration and discovery. As we mourned the loss of the crew, including the teacher Christa McAuliffe, it sparked discussions about the risks and rewards of space exploration, as well as the resilience of the human spirit in the face of tragedy. This experience instilled in me a deep appreciation for the pursuit of knowledge and the courage to venture into the unknown, tempered by a recognition of the responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of those who dare to explore.
My very first job was as a door-to-door salesman selling pots and pans. I held this job for two years. It was an experience that taught me a lot about resilience, persuasion, and the value of independence.
My favorite book is "The Power of Positive Thinking" by Norman Vincent Peale because it offers biblical wisdom, and "The Autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila" because together, they provide insight into virtue and living a fulfilling life.
If I could be any fictional character, I'd want to be Guinevere.
The last song that got stuck in my head was "I Surrender.
Something that has been a struggle in my life is believing in myself and fully embracing the gifts that God has bestowed upon me. This internal battle has often hindered my ability to fully love and serve others as I desire.
The ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature is one of collaboration, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to serving the best interests of the people of the state. The governor, equipped with knowledge and wisdom in legal history and Constitutional law, plays a crucial role in representing the state's interests and upholding the rule of law. They must work hand in hand with the legislature to enact policies that benefit the citizens and ensure accountability in governance.

The governor should be influential and accountable in pushing back on bad laws and policies, serving as a check against potential overreach or harmful legislation. At the same time, they must engage in constructive dialogue with the legislature, fostering an environment of cooperation and compromise to address the diverse needs of the state's population.

Ultimately, a harmonious relationship between the governor and state legislature is essential for effective governance, with both branches working together to enact laws that uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and the well-being of all citizens, without bias or party prejudice.
Over the next decade, I perceive several significant challenges facing our state, including:

1. Crime: Addressing crime rates and ensuring public safety will be paramount, requiring comprehensive strategies that address root causes, rehabilitation, and community policing.

2. Child Trafficking: Combating child trafficking and exploitation demands increased awareness, prevention efforts, and robust law enforcement measures to protect vulnerable children and prosecute perpetrators.

3. Homelessness: Tackling homelessness requires a multifaceted approach, including affordable housing initiatives, supportive services for mental health and substance abuse, and economic opportunities for at-risk individuals.

4. Immigration: Managing immigration issues effectively entails advocating for fair and compassionate policies at the state and federal levels, addressing workforce needs, and providing support for immigrant communities.

5. Functional Illiteracy: Addressing functional illiteracy is essential for fostering educational equity and economic opportunity. Investing in literacy programs, early childhood education, and adult education initiatives can help bridge literacy gaps and empower individuals.

6. Poverty: Addressing poverty requires holistic approaches that address economic disparities, access to healthcare, education, and affordable housing. Social safety nets and economic empowerment programs can help lift individuals and families out of poverty.

7. Morality: Upholding moral values such as godliness, self-control, and faithfulness is crucial for maintaining social cohesion and individual well-being. Promoting moral principles in our communities and institutions can contribute to a more ethical and harmonious society.

By addressing these challenges collaboratively, with innovative solutions and a commitment to equity and justice, we can build a stronger and more resilient state for all residents.
While previous experience in government or politics can provide valuable insights and understanding of the legislative process, it is not the only indicator of effectiveness for state legislators. What's more crucial is a diverse skill set and a genuine commitment to serving the interests of constituents. Legislators should possess competence in legal reasoning, research, and analysis, as well as strong communication, negotiation, and collaborative skills. They should also have a passion for law and politics, coupled with the ability to think critically and generate innovative ideas. Additionally, qualities such as empathy, customer service orientation, and the ability to build relationships are vital for effective representation. Whether acquired through prior political experience or other professional backgrounds like mediation or paralegal work, a well-rounded skill set and dedication to serving the public interest are paramount for state legislators.
Yes, building relationships with other legislators is highly beneficial for effective governance and legislative outcomes. By fostering positive relationships, legislators can create channels for collaboration, negotiation, and consensus-building, which are essential for advancing legislative agendas and achieving policy objectives. Moreover, strong interpersonal connections enable legislators to understand differing perspectives, bridge ideological divides, and find common ground on contentious issues. These relationships not only facilitate the passage of legislation but also contribute to a more cohesive and productive legislative environment. Ultimately, building relationships with other legislators enhances a lawmaker's ability to influence decision-making, advocate for constituents, and drive positive change for their communities.
Yes, I admire Representatives DeGraff, Luck, and Bottoms for their dedication to public service, their commitment to their constituents, and their leadership qualities. They have demonstrated integrity, innovation, and a strong work ethic in their roles as legislators, and I aspire to emulate their effective governance and positive impact on their communities.
No, I am currently focused on pursuing a career in law and attending law school in the future.
Yes, a particularly memorable experience for me was when I drafted a parent rights initiative and advocated for it passionately. Despite having significant support for the initiative, it was ultimately killed by Democrats in committee. This experience highlighted the challenges and frustrations of navigating the legislative process, but it also reinforced my commitment to advocating for important issues and fighting for the rights of parents in our district.
How many Cubans does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Three. One to screw it in and the other two to talk crap.
The legislature should play a role in overseeing the use of emergency powers to ensure accountability and transparency. While emergency powers can be necessary in times of crisis, they also have the potential to infringe on individual rights and liberties if not properly regulated. Granting emergency powers should involve checks and balances to prevent abuse and ensure that decisions are made in the best interest of the public. Therefore, legislative oversight can help maintain a balance between necessary action and protecting Constitutional principles.
If elected, the first bill I would introduce is the "Parents Bill of Rights." This legislation aims to protect and uphold the rights of parents in various aspects of their children's education, healthcare, and upbringing. It would establish clear guidelines and protections for parental involvement in decisions regarding their children's education, medical care, and overall well-being. This bill is essential for empowering parents to be active participants in their children's lives and ensuring that their voices are heard and respected in matters that directly affect their families.

Several committees interest me due to their relevance to key issues affecting our community and my background in law, mediation, and advocacy for health freedom. Specifically, I am interested in:

1. Judiciary Committee: Given my experience as a paralegal and mediator, I am keen to contribute to discussions on legal matters, constitutional issues, and judicial oversight.

2. Education Committee: As a homeschool mom and advocate for educational freedom and family values, I am passionate about ensuring that all children have access to quality education and parental choice in schooling.

3. Ethics Committee: Upholding ethical standards and promoting transparency in government are fundamental to restoring trust in public institutions. I am committed to ensuring accountability and integrity in all aspects of governance.

4. Health and Human Services Committee: Advocating for health freedom and access to holistic healthcare options is a priority for me. I am dedicated to promoting policies that empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

5. Small Business and Economic Development Committee: As an entrepreneur and advocate for economic freedom, I understand the importance of fostering small business growth and creating job opportunities in our community.

These committees align with my areas of expertise, values, and priorities, and I look forward to contributing my knowledge and skills to address the pressing issues facing our district and state.
My views on financial transparency and government accountability are rooted in the principles of integrity, transparency, and fiscal responsibility. I firmly believe that government should operate with the utmost transparency, ensuring that taxpayers have access to information about how their money is being spent. This includes transparent budgeting processes, comprehensive financial reporting, and accountability mechanisms to prevent misuse or abuse of public funds.

Regarding advocacy against ESG criteria, I stand firmly against any measures that could undermine our economic and personal freedoms. While environmental, social, and governance considerations are important, they should not be imposed in a way that restricts individual liberties or stifles economic growth. Instead, I advocate for policies that balance environmental stewardship with economic prosperity and personal freedoms.

Furthermore, I believe in promoting clear and focused debates on critical issues such as life, liberty, and property. By addressing one issue at a time, we can ensure that discussions are thorough, productive, and lead to meaningful solutions. Clarity and transparency in debates are essential for fostering informed decision-making and ensuring that the voices of all individual citizens are heard.
Yes, I support changes to the current state ballot initiative process to make it easier for citizens to participate in lawmaking when they feel their rights are being usurped by current lawmakers. This could involve streamlining the process for gathering signatures, providing clearer guidelines for submitting initiatives, and ensuring that citizen-led initiatives receive fair consideration and adequate resources for implementation. Additionally, measures to increase transparency and accountability in the initiative process would help uphold the integrity of direct democracy and ensure that the voices of citizens are heard in shaping public policy.

I’m a 2nd generation American who’s grandparents and parents fled Castroism (Cuban Communism) in 1961. I remember my mother talking about Batista’s regime and how he would allow citizens to pursue making money and spending but would oppress and silence political opposition and descent. As soon as Castro took Cuba in a Coup d’etat in 1959 and started consolidating power, my grandfather started making plans to flee. And in 1961, my grandfather sent my mom to Mexico, she was 15. And he and my grandma left to Spain.

It took 6 months for my grandparents to get papers to enter the USA and reunite with my mom in Miami where I was born in 1973.

The lesson I learned is that freedom is frail.

I’m Catholic and a strict constitutionalist. I’m running Because I’m tired of the constitution being ignored.
  • The Constitution is the Solution!
  • Literacy and morals matter if you want to stay free.
  • God is key to American liberty
I’m passionate about literacy and parental rights.

I love the entire constitution and our biblical principles in the natural law.

I’m passionate about energy and the economy and if elected I will introduce legislation that buys back gold and silver coins.

If elected I want to help sponsor the parents bill of rights and a tax credit for children leaving school system.

I would extend the term limits to 4 yrs for house but only be allowed to run 2 times.

I would repeal the sex education bill and the abortion bill.
I look up to the Holy Family and I want to follow Jesus and Mary’s example because they were perfect humans.
I have lots of books but one should read St Thomas Aquinas Suma Theologica, John Locke, St Augustine City of God, the Natural Law by Aquinas, law, morality and justice by Aquinas, and the constitution, Declaration of Independence, the federalists papers

And watch the entire series of The Constitution is the Solution https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLU16omkJffq4auEcsaU1GdAL0TNyUndS6
Highly literate and moral elected officials.

They should know and understand the Natural Law, John Locke and Thomas Aquinas as the foundation.

They should have read both the federalists and anti federalists papers and understand Americanism.

They should know the Declaration of Independence in its entirety.

They should read the Bible even if they don’t believe in God. The Bible is the source of our moral code.

I have strong communication skills— oral and written skills.

I am a thought leader and inclusive as well as positive.

And I’m a life-long learner. I am a legal geek. I read many books.

I love debating and discussing ideas with my colleagues. And I am a problem solver.

Upholding and defending the constitution first and then listening to each individual voter who was able to vote.

And not make laws that the voters don’t have unanimous consent
I want leave my son in a free country like the one my parents found refuge.

I want my son to know that you must participate in politics not just vote at the ballot.

Liberty is frail.

You need to fight for it.

Government can not usurp individual rights for the collective.

I remember when Reagan was elected president.

On January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger (OV-099) exploded 73 seconds into its flight, killing all seven crew members, becoming the first known American space disaster. Watch How Many Rockets Have Nasa Launched Video About Us
I was an independent contractor for Carico International. I sold fine stainless steel cookware, water filtration system, promoting environmental health and education as well as sold fine crystals and China and silverware.

I loved learning about contaminated water and air.

I held for 2 years.
I have too many but the Constitution.
It took me years after college to gain the wisdom and understanding to use my knowledge.

I had to pay the price of learning to reading well.

The ideal relationship is one where the Governor is upholding the constitution and being a check on Congress.

Influencing legislators to protect life, liberty and property and ensuring laws don’t deprive life, liberty and property without due process and equal protection.
The economy, homelessness, education, energy, mental health, and crime.

The drawback is that we would not have a strong constitutional check and balance on power. The purpose of government is to protect life, liberty and property.

Bicameral means the senate can check and balance the house.

Without a check and balance, legislators will pass laws that may be unconstitutional.

Corruption would be high.
No. But it would be beneficial if legislators would be 100% literate and had a moral compass.

It would be beneficial if legislators read the Bible for moral support on behavior.
Yes. Everyone whether republican or democrat should build relationships with constituents and really listen. And not make laws that don’t balance life, liberty and property.
I like committees of moral citizens educated in engineering, geology, and surveying as well as law.
Representative Luck is the most level headed representative currently and I would model after her
A resident said his friend committed suicide and the health care system didn’t prevent it.

A resident Hispanic was not allowed in to her daughters school the first day of classes during Covid last September and her school wanted to segregate herby making her participate in Hispanic activities only.
Ricky Recardo telling Lucy what her bank account is always empty and Lucy saying you don’t give me any money…
Only to defend our borders from foreign invasion.
Yes. But one should not compromise moral and constitutional values.
