Marlene is an adopted child of Haitian American family that stepped up when her Jamaican parents passed during her youth. At a very young age she was instilled with the ethics of hard work, empathy, community development, and entrepreneurship. This has been further enhanced with over 20 years' experience in education, healthcare, mental health, and the mental health/education nonprofit she began in Vegas to increase access to services in low-middle income households in Las Vegas. Her belief is that community is only strong when every voice is heard, and we all work together to find common ground that enhances the lives of every member of the community. Political division has hindered our progress in education, mental health, and economic growth in Nevada that all families can feel. She has been engrained within the community since moving to Las Vegas with the goals of improving the lives of families and being the advocate voice of individuals that get ignored. Her three primary pillars are Education Equity, Mental Health Awareness/Access, & Economic Growth.
  • Proactive Mental Health Awareness Marlene is an advocate and expert for proactive mental health awareness with a M.A. in Human Services Counseling: Specialized in Crisis Response and Trauma from Liberty University. She is a founder and chair of a nonprofit that specializes in mental health, crisis response, and education services. She believes the key to positive health, education, job performance, and relationship development is to understand how the mind reacts to stress and negativity and to learn how to improve your internal defenses before tragedy strikes. Proactively seek health before it becomes illness.
  • Improve Education Equity As a past K-12 teacher, current PhD(c) in Education, and psychology professor at CSN, Marlene believes school choice (leaving neighborhoods) is only a band aid for the inequity in our public school system. Address or income should not dictate the quality of your child's education. Every family should have the opportunity to select the best method of education for their family. We need more school options such as private schools, charter schools, online, in-person, or a hybrid. We need to equip EVERY school to properly help all students, especially our special needs students. All schools should be allowed to adapt to their unique socioeconomic location. School construction should keep pace with population growth.
  • Raising Household Income with a Diversified Workforce A better educated workforce will demand higher wages, more stability, more small businesses, and a stronger middle-class to continue to make Nevada an economic leader!! Nevada should also be the clean energy capital of the U.S. with jobs that benefits all workers with education in the trades as well as higher education degrees. Higher costs of living demand wages that keep up so the average family can achieve their American dream without fear from income inequity in relation to business growth. A mutually beneficial partnership between the labor force, unionized or not, and employers is essential for sustained growth.
Education, Mental Health, Economic Growth and Workforce development, Affordable Housing, Access to healthcare for ALL Nevadans, Increase in Access to Renewable Energy, Community Safety, and Common-sense gun regulation that does not infringe upon second amendment rights.
Listening to all voices regardless of if they are in the majority is the most important characteristic of an elected official. An elected official is not a political rubberstamp and should put forth policies that best suit their constituents. As growing population that benefits from the contributions from multicultural backgrounds only strengthen community ties and interests. Finding common ground to create initiatives is the only way not to leave any member of the community behind.
I am an empathetic ear that always has a hand extended out to help out my fellow neighbor. My passion is to be the voice for the voiceless and show individuals their worth and potential.
Being engrained within the community and being present. Too many officials only appear during campaign season then disappear. We cannot create laws or policies based only upon lobbyist opinion or interests. We owe it to our constituents to be constantly present and available so we may adjust according to the needs of the people we represent..
I have not always had the support and love that I provide for my family and how I raised my children to remain humble and to always express their feelings. Despite the lack of support, I have always been driven to help others and continue to grow in my capacities that has led me to public service. I founded my nonprofit to truly help the community and I regard financial gain as my last influence in life.
There should be a balance of ideas as we are all elected representatives of our constituents. Gridlock does nothing but hurts Nevada and its potential for growth. An agreement where one party is 100 percent happy with the language, this is a bad agreement. Nevada is too diverse for one perspective reflected in our laws and policies. Of course, the majority opinion of the community is the primary language as that is the will of the people.
Getting out of the bottom in ranking for education to create a better workforce that entices corporations to come to NV and pay a living wage to all workers. Becoming the renewable energy leader of the nation by utilizing the vast amount of sunshine and wind that can lead to increases in an EV charging grid, Independent Residential energy, and water conservation.
No, I believe that our legislators should be community advocates, organizers, and non-career politicians that can lose touch with the changing socioeconomics of our society. Term limits can serve as incentive to remain engaged with the community and never become comfortable due to constant corporate influence.
Yes. As elected officials from all over Nevada, it is our duty to represent our constituents and find ways to move Nevada forward. We cannot come to session with narrow vision and an inability to work with others with differing opinions. Inaction is the detriment of our community and the reason why improvements are not evenly felt by our constituents. Spilt government has a duty to work together to find common ground.
The first bill I'd sponsor is the introduction of trained mental health/crisis counselors to be added to all schools that has an appropriate student to counselor ratio. This bill will also change the teaching criteria for 2- and 4-year degree programs in education, healthcare, and early childhood development. A specific revenue source would be created that flexes with community growth and school construction/enhancement.
Education, Health & Mental Health, Economic Development, Workforce diversity and Enhancement.
Too many people lose faith in government when it fails to disclose the true nature of bills and how revenue is distributed. If a revenue source is advertised as a specific enhancement to the community, it should be reflected in the appropriations aspect of bills. If we believe a new tax is going to education, it should be 100 percent transparent what parts of education are receiving a precise dollar amount.
