Marsha Hill completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2019. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Hill's responses.
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
1. Ensuring housing for homeless Toledo Public School families, 2. Strengthening the Toledo Living Wage Ordinance to cover more workers, and 3. Addressing abandoned houses
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Ending homelessness. It is absurd that we have so many abandoned houses in my district, and yet so many families sending their children to Toledo Public Schools that go without housing. Ensuring housing as a right, not a privilege will be a key focus of mine as your Toledo City Councilwoman.
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to be remembered as the City Councilwoman who found the solution and created legislation to end homelessness for Public School Students
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I remember the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. I was only 5 years old, but I remember it vividly to this day, standing in our family room watching it on a black and white TV with my parents and then after, Martin Luther King Jr, and Robert F. Kennedy.
What is your favorite book? Why?
Cane River by Lalita Tademy, because it is an example of extreme tenacity (life skills.)
Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?
The Toledo Living Wage ordinance guarantees city contractors a minimum wage of $13.62 an hour and healthcare benefits or $16.09 an hour if they do not receive healthcare benefits. I believe this ordinance should be expanded and enforced more strictly, as many workers are not even aware of it's existence at the present time.
What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?
To have common life skills; blue collar life skills. To have lived the life that your constituency has lived. I don't come from a privileged background. I don't have a masters degree or a trust fund. I am equal with my constituents, and I will serve them directly as such.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?
No, long term government employment of elected officials can lead to arrogance, corruption, and lack of empathy
