Marsha Ternus was the Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court. She became Chief Justice when her colleagues selected her for the position in 2006. She was the first woman to serve as chief justice in the history of the Iowa Supreme Court.[1] She was first appointed to the court in 1993 by Governor Terry Branstad and her term expired on December 31, 2010.[2]

Ternus stood for retention in 2010.[3] She was not retained, with 55.04% of the vote going to "No".[4]

Education

Ternus received her B.A. from the University of Iowa in 1972 and her J.D. from Drake University Law School in 1977.[5]

Professional career

Prior to her appointment, Ternus worked in private practice for the law firm Bradshaw, Fowler, Proctor and Fairgrave.[5]
