What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Civil and Human Rights for all including access to health care.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Fraces Perkins who served under FDR when he was Governor of NY and as his Secretary of Labor; she was. US first woman Cabinet appointee. The brave women astronauts, and the women computers who we now are learning about despite their great contributions at NASA in times of racial segregation.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
There are too many for me to choose just one.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Openness and tolerance
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
Ability to process. Information and also to see the complex context as well as the big picture. I understand how good policymaking is an inclusive process.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Standing on principle but also first listening to diverse opinions on issues. Good constituency service and treating all in the District with respect.
What legacy would you like to leave?
A legacy of trust and good will.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The closing of Donaldson AFB in Greenville SC when I was about 6 years old.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Handing tobacco on a farm when in 6th Grade. Also, I helped my older brother with news paper route.
What happened on your most awkward date?
That is personal and not relevant
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Easter, as it represents a new beginning.
What is your favorite book? Why?
Any book by Dorothea Benton Frank. She writes funny and engaging books about Low Country South Carolina and Charleston.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Winnie the Pooh

Big Yellow Taxi:: "They paved Paradise and put up a parking lot."
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
I have struggled with depression and Post Traumatic Stress.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
That is a state issue, but for North Carolina / favor an independent Commission as proposed by Common Cause.
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
The members are elected directly by voters and the Speaker is elected by the majority party as selected by votes.
Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
Yes, but not always necessary.
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Small Business, Natural Resources, Education and Labor Committee
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
No longer are two years enough time. Too much time is now spent raising campaign funds. The issues are very complex and there is a steep learning curve. I would increase the term length to four years and allow Representatives 3 terms.
What are your thoughts on term limits?
I favor term limits. See above.
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
That would not likely apply for some time for a freshman representative.
Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Speaker Tip O'Neill of. MA.
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
As a former staff member of Disability Rights NC, I was present at a hospital's Human Rights Committee meeting. A patient had recently died after being neglected by staff and receiving no food, water, or bathroom break for 22 hours. The nurse in charge, when asked why the staff involved were not removed, said "he would have died anyway” This callous and unprofessional conduct has never left my vivid memory of that day 10 years ago.
